Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - What We Know So Far
After years of disappointing fans of "Star Wars" with the underwhelming reboots of the "Star Wars: Battlefront" series, Electronic Arts finally hit pay dirt when in 2019 the company released "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," a thrilling single-player experience. Inspired by "Dark Souls" and developed by Respawn Entertainment, the game focused on former Jedi Cal Kestis as he attempts to survive in a post-Jedi, Empire-controlled world. While the game was both a critical and financial success, it was too little too late for EA, as in 2021 LucasFilm announced that the company would lose its exclusive rights to the sci-fi franchise and that other companies would now have an opportunity to develop their own "Star Wars" titles.
Even if it is no longer the only game in town when it comes to "Star Wars" projects, it seems that EA is still dedicated to the IP and will soon be releasing a follow-up to the highly successful "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order," titled "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor." But what information is out there regarding such a highly anticipated sequel and what can players expect when they get their hands on it? Here's everything we know about "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor."
When is the release date for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?
While a specific date wasn't given when it was officially unveiled at 2022's Star Wars Celebration, it was confirmed that "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" will be released at some point in 2023. As advertised, the game seems to be a next-gen exclusive and will only be available for the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC platforms. Fans caught wind of the "Fallen Order" sequel's existence back in 2020, meaning that the game has likely been in development for some time.
The shift to being a next-gen exclusive has been a growing trend in recent months. Just recently, "Gotham Knights" was delayed and had fans seeing red when its last-gen versions were canceled. However, as the new generation of gaming gets deeper into its lifespan it's only natural that developers eventually abandon the older generation altogether. It does, however, bode well for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" looking and playing even better than its 2019 predecessor.
Is there a trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?
An official teaser trailer for "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" was released May 27, 2022 as part of the Star Wars Celebration. In the trailer, the typical imagery associated with "Star Wars" makes an appearance. While no gameplay footage was shown, the trailer did give off vague hints of the game's plot, as it seems that Cal Kestis and his companions are still being pursued by the Inquisitors in the new title. Viewers were also given a brief look into what appears to be a bacta tank containing an unknown individual, though Cal seemed to have an interest in this person.
Outside of BD-1 — the Cal's droid — none of Cal's companions from "Jedi: Fallen Order" appear, be they Cere, Greez, or Merrin. The group's ship, Stinger Mantis, does appear though it looks to be heavily damaged. The trailer's bleak and dark imagery could indicate that Cal and company's journey has gotten rockier since we last saw them.
The trailer was very well received by fans, garnering over 3.5 million views on EA Star Wars' official YouTube channel.
What is the gameplay like in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor?
EA decided to make a drastic change in its approach to "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order." Prior to its development, EA had mostly focused on multiplayer experiences with "Star Wars: Battlefront" and "Star Wars: Battlefront 2." During this time, EA notoriously declared single-player games as being "finished." However, both "Battlefront" games disappointed fans, it seems that EA had walked that comment back and entrusted Respawn Entertainment with creating a single-player "Star Wars" experience which ultimately became "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order."
The gameplay resembled that of "Dark Souls," forcing players to strategically approach enemies and bosses, as well as forcing them to find "Meditation" spots that would refill Cal's resources at the expense of nearby defeated enemies respawning. As of right now, no gameplay for "Jedi: Survivor" has been released. But if one is to guess, it's likely that it won't deviate too much from its predecessors considering not only the success of "Fallen Order," but the recent successes of similar games such as "Elden Ring."
