10 Biggest Movie Sequels Coming In 2027
As 2026 comes to an end, we prepare to close one book on a fantastic year at the movies and open up the next. It will be a challenge for 2027 to measure up to a year that brought us outstanding films ranging from "The Odyssey" to "You Can See Everything," and some of the biggest films of 2026 haven't even arrived yet. But next year is also looking quite strong, with a number of major sequels among the biggest upcoming offerings.
In short, it's shaping up to be a big franchise year, for better or worse. Marvel and DC both have crucial installments coming for their expanded universes in 2027, alongside new entries in some of the biggest animated film series. The list also includes a pair of highly anticipated horror sequels, the next kaiju showdown in the MonsterVerse, the latest in a popular video game franchise, and a long-awaited comedy follow-up. These are the biggest movie sequels coming in 2027.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse
Long have we waited for the third film in the outstanding "Spider-Verse" series – a movie first announced for a March 2024 release date, and now finally dropping more than three years later. Unless there's another delay, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse" will hit theaters on June 18, 2027. "Across the Spider-Verse" ended on a cliffhanger, with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) coming face-to-face with a less friendly version of himself in a parallel universe, all while being pursued by Miguel O'Hara (Oscar Isaac) and trying to stop the Spot (Jason Schwartzman).
Of the three superhero movie sequels on this list, this is most exciting. The last two "Spider-Verse" films are nothing short of masterful, pushing the medium of big-screen animation into bold new territory with an absolutely stunning aesthetic. The action and story have kept pace, but it's the audiovisual experience that really sets these movies apart, and it's what fans will be looking forward to with "Beyond."
"We're chugging away in the edit room with the team, and it's coming together really well," co-writer Christopher Miller told Empire in a July 2026 interview, where he and his longtime writing partner Phil Lord explained that the new film is being made to fit the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio of IMAX. "Everyone on the crew is so good at what they do," Lord added. "You just sit around, marvel at all these brilliant artists, and then we get to work with these great filmmakers, sit in a room all day, and just try to make everything incrementally better together."
Paranormal Activity
The franchise that basically built Blumhouse has laid dormant for half a decade, but it's emerging from the shadows yet again in 2027. The eighth "Paranormal Activity" film is simply titled "Paranormal Activity," signaling a sort of reboot for the found-footage horror franchise that leapt into the zeitgeist back in 2007.
The last attempted reset came via 2021's "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," which arrived six years after the previous entry, "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension." "Next of Kin" failed to revitalize a franchise that had been relegated to the schlock bin in the eyes of many. A canceled theatrical release and move to streaming in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn't help its chances, but even without that, the best "Paranormal Activity" movies seemed to be well in the past.
Now, the series will try again, without the subtitles of the last few entries, and with the producing trio of Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and James Wan that's brought the "Insidious" franchise such success in recent years. Perhaps the addition of Wan, who has been a maestro of box-office horror hits but is new to this particular IP, can help "Paranormal Activity" crawl out of the neglected basement where it's been left like a haunted doll. The new film will bring viewers back to the house from the original, which, if nothing else, reflects a desire to get back to the root of what made those first few movies so popular. "Paranormal Activity" is set for release in theaters on May 21, 2027.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Look, the kids love Sonic. They love that blue dude with 'tude who Sega-does what Ninten-don't. Even so, the notion that we would get not just three, but four big-budget "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies would have been laughable a decade ago. With the infamous first design for the CGI character, we very nearly went down a parallel universe rabbit hole where only one of these movies got made, bombed, and was never heard from again.
Instead, we live in this universe, where three "Sonic" movies have already won box office gold and proven themselves to be fun and breezy family affairs, if not terribly groundbreaking. "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" was certainly the best yet, with plenty of fan service for '90s kids sprinkled into a colorful action-adventure story. From everything we know, "Sonic the Hedgehog 4" looks to keep up the momentum with two new characters — longstanding video game antagonist Metal Sonic, and pink hedgehog Amy Rose (Kristen Bell), both of whom were first introduced in the 1993 game "Sonic CD."
"Sonic 4" is unlikely to change these movies into something revolutionary that we haven't seen before, but it should be another fun adventure in a series that's proved to be consistently entertaining. The film is currently scheduled for release on March 19, 2027.
Avengers: Secret Wars
It's been a long lead-up to "Avengers: Doomsday," but remember that's only the first in a duology of "Avengers" films. "Avengers: Secret Wars" is currently scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Obviously, the major beats of that film will depend entirely on what happens in "Doomsday" — details that we won't have until December.
That said, Kevin Feige has repeated teased a major shakeup that could be coming in the 2027 installment. "'Endgame,' literally, was about endings," the Marvel Studios boss said last year at a press event covered by Variety. "'Secret Wars' is about beginnings." Later in the same junket, Feige shied away from the formal title of "reboot" but admitted that it's not so far off. "Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines."
Then earlier this year, Feige penned a foreword for a new edition of the "Secret Wars" comic, writing, "All the stories of the past remain true, but now all things are possible." Teasing how the MCU version will be running with that idea, Feige said, "We hope to carry that inspiration forward into a new medium." It's all still speculation, but all hints point to this being a major point of transition for the MCU, likely away from the multiverse entirely. After "Doomsday," we should have a much clearer idea of what's coming.
A Quiet Place Part III
The third entry in John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's horror trilogy (not including the 2024 prequel, "A Quiet Place: Day One") arrives on July 30, 2027. Given how popular and critically praised the previous films have been, "A Quiet Place Part III" is already shaping up to be one of the biggest horror releases of the year.
Krasinski is writing and directing once again, with Blunt back in the lead role of Evelyn Abbott. Cillian Murphy is also returning from "A Quiet Place Part II," while Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe reprise their roles as Regan and Marcus Abbott. New additions for the third installment include Jack O'Connell, Katy O'Brian, and Jason Clarke.
Story details have yet to be revealed, but with seven years between the release of "A Quiet Place Part II" and the new film, we should be getting a pretty sizable jump within the "Quiet Place" timeline as well — a necessity given the age of the younger stars. We also know that the film will act as a proper third act to the core trilogy, with Jupe telling Radio Times in August that it "pretty well bookends the series."
Shrek 5
Almost two decades since the last proper "Shrek" film, the big green fella and company are returning to the big screen. "Shrek 5" is set to drop in theaters on June 30, 2027, directed by "Shrek 2" co-director (and voice of the Gingerbread Man) Conrad Vernon, along with Walt Dohrn, who worked on the earlier films in the series as a writer and artist before taking the director's chair for the "Trolls" films. The script was written by Darren Lemke, who contributed to "Shrek Forever After," and David Lindsay-Abaire, who wrote the book and lyrics for "Shrek the Musical."
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz are all confirmed to return, joined by Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo, and Marcello Hernández as the voices of Shrek and Fiona's children. We'll be jumping pretty far ahead in time to account for the 17 years since "Shrek Forever After," hence the adult casting for the ogre kiddos. The first trailer for "Shrek 5," released earlier this year, is clearly meant to evoke fond memories of "Shrek 2" in particular, with Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, and the fam traveling to another fairy tale city called "Further, Further Away." Hijinks, as they say, ensue.
The history of the "Shrek" franchise has its fair share of duds, but those first two movies remain iconic, and the series' last spin-off outing, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish," has been heralded as a masterpiece of modern animation. That pedigree, plus a great combo cast of old and new voices, makes for a promising picture.
Spaceballs: The New One
Mel Brooks is 100 years old, but the legendary comedian will once again grace the screen in 2027 with "Spaceballs: The New One," a sequel to his 1987 Star Wars parody film. Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga are all returning alongside Brooks, who has abdicated directing duties to "Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar" director Josh Greenbaum. The writing team consists of Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit, with Gad also set to appear in the film. The new additions to the cast are led by Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman.
From what's been released so far by Amazon MGM Studios, the new comedy sounds like it will poke fun at a lot about the Disney era of Star Wars. "Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned," the official synopsis opens, spoofing the infamous "The Rise of Skywalker" line. "With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and the Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise releasing TV episodes theatrically, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa's undisciplined son, Prince Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans are demanding."
There is undoubtedly much more than one movie's worth of material to parody from the last decade-plus of Star Wars, but "Spaceballs: The New One" will also have to differentiate itself in a world where spoofing the world's most famous sci-fi franchise has become a common practice. The first film broke ground, but we've had decades of "Family Guy" parodies, Glup Shitto memes, and general ire at the sequel trilogy since then. We'll see if "The New One" can rise above all that noise when it comes out on April 23, 2027.
Man of Tomorrow
It feels like James Gunn's "Superman" just came out, and now we're already in the lead-up to the sequel, "Man of Tomorrow," which is set for release on July 9, 2027. David Corenswet's debut in the blue and red earned high marks both critically and at the box office, setting the stage well for the larger DCU. The franchise now faces a bit more uncertainty in the wake of the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger, but for now, Gunn and crew seems to still be going strong, with lots of reasons to get excited about "Man of Tomorrow."
Most of the cast from "Superman" is back, including Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific (who delivered a show-stealing turn in the last movie), and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, who will be donning his iconic warsuit this time. Luthor will also be teaming up with Superman to defend Earth from the master villain Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
In addition to the already sizable returning cast from the first film, "Man of Tomorrow" is bringing in Aaron Pierre's John Stewart from "Lanterns," Milly Alcock's Supergirl, and Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes from "Blue Beetle." It's a packed roster, and it will be Gunn's job to find a way to balance screentime for all of these different characters, while also sticking to the core story. At the very least, it should be fun. At best, it could be sensational.
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova
Director Adam Wingard has stepped away from the "Godzilla x Kong" films after helming the last two, with director Grant Sputore taking over for "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova," arriving on March 26, 2027. Dan Stevens reprises his role from 2024's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," joined by new additions Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O'Connell, the late Sam Neill (in one of his final screen appearances), Delroy Lindo, and Matthew Modine.
Few official details have been released about the plot, though rumors of more classic Toho kaiju — namely, SpaceGodzilla — have been circulating. "Supernova" has the unenviable job of following up the release of "Godzilla Minus Zero," which has earned rave reviews. But while Toho's recent films have certainly received more critical praise, the MonsterVerse continues to go strong, with "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" working on a third season and no signs of the Godzilla/Kong films drying up.
Frozen III
"Frozen" mania may have died down a bit in recent years, but make no mistake: This is still one of the biggest franchises under the Disney umbrella. The first two films raked in over $2.7 billion combined, and "Frozen III" should add to that total substantially when it drops on November 24, 2027 — just in time for the holidays.
Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff are all returning as the voices of Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff, with the story revolving at least in part around the royal wedding of Anna and Kristoff. Disney showed a snippet of the film at D23 earlier this year, which teased those festivities being disrupted by a new antagonist. Menzel added at the same event that the story will take the group away from their home of Arendelle.
"There's a reason the movie is coming out in 2027," Gad told People back in 2025. "And that is because no one wants to rush this. Everyone wants this to not just be a sequel or a money grab. They want this to be absolutely worthy of the story we set out to make in 2013." We'll see if the threequel is worth the wait and the hype when "Frozen III" premieres next fall.
