Trek To Yomi - What We Know So Far

The March 2022 PlayStation State of Play had a lot of great announcements, including titles like "The DioField Chronicle" and "Valkyrie Elysium." Publishing group Devolver Digital also showcased an interesting title at the event: "Trek to Yomi." Luckily, fans got quite a good amount of information with the release.

"Trek to Yomi" is being developed by both Flying Wild Hog and Leonard Menchiari, the video game designer behind "RIOT: Civil Unrest" and "The Eternal Castle." According to Menchiari's Twitter, the game is based on "Japanese cinema from the 50s and 60s." While neither developers have a ton of titles under their belts, Devolver Digital has published nearly 100 games on Steam, including "Shadow Warrior 3," "Loop Hero," and "Gris."

A good bit of information was released alongside the announcement as well, and it left fans with plenty to look forward to. The first, and most pressing question is when "Trek to Yomi" will be coming out.

When's the release date for Trek to Yomi?

While there was no exact release date announced for "Trek to Yomi," Devolver Digital said that the game would be releasing sometime in 2022. The game's coming to quite a few platforms, including the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox X, Xbox S, PC, and even Game Pass.

Despite giving no release date, Devolver Digital's trend of announcing releases could be the light at the end of a tunnel. According to Steam, the publishing group has quite a few games lined up to release in 2022. However, the only ones with any release dates are in March. After that, "Trek to Yomi" is listed, which could mean that the game is supposed to be the next in line to release after the March games. It's also worth noting that the group could have showcased "Trek to Yomi" in the March State of Play because it's coming out so soon compared to the other games being published.

Is there a trailer for Trek to Yomi?

"Trek to Yomi" was first announced in July 2021 with a short announcement trailer that opened up a bit of what the game was about. While it's not considered the main trailer for the game, it's got a lot of gameplay footage that wasn't used for future trailers.

Back in December 2021, Devolver Digital released a gameplay trailer for "Trek to Yomi." The one-and-a-half-minute trailer is also the one featured on the game's Steam page, and it was enough to thrill audiences. The trailer for the game opens up fans to the story, which was explained more on Steam.

The player's character, Hiroki, is protecting his Master and town from various threats. However, the end of the trailer leaves on quite a mysterious note as Hiroki ventures somewhere new that seems otherworldly. According to the Steam page, Hiroki "must voyage beyond life and death to confront himself," which could be what the end of the trailer is touching on.

What's the gameplay in Trek to Yomi like?

"Trek to Yomi" is a side-scrolling action-adventure game where the player takes control of Hiroki, a young samurai. As such, there's a lot of fighting going on while traveling through various areas. For the most part, the combat looks like it could be pretty intense.

In the gameplay trailer, Hiroki at one point looks to be parrying an enemy while time slowed down, a welcome feature compared to what looks like combo attacks throughout much of the rest of the trailer. The smooth combat combined with the stunning graphics made the game look extremely crisp.

The gameplay in the trailer does a brilliant job of showing off the 4K graphics. Despite being in black and white – a tribute to old Japanese cinema – the game plays with light and shadows to create a beautiful, mysterious, and even a bit lonely world that Hiroki lives and fights in, which seems fitting for a samurai that's fighting alone.
