  • Johnny writes features for Nicki Swift and Looper, and is part of the interview team for each, covering figures in music and film as well as reality television -- the wilder or weirder the better.
  • Johnny has written thousands of record reviews across a wide range of outlets and multiple genres, developed feature content, artist and musician profiles, and quick-hit blog content cut from from the latest scuttlebutt in music, movies, and larger pop media.
  • As a longtime contributor to McGraw-Hill's textbook division, Johnny's writing on film, music, and popular culture benefits from the sweep of narrative history. Everything is cyclical after all, and his strong sense of trends and through lines informs every piece of content he creates for Nicki Swift and Looper, whether it's an exclusive interview or the latest celeb gossip.

Experience

Johnny Loftus has worked professionally as a writer and editor for over two decades. As a music critic, he served on the writing staffs at All Music Guide, Pitchfork Media, and the Village Voice, and was the music section editor at Metro Times, Detroit's leading alternative weekly, where he wrote features, conducted interviews, and blogged daily. For 15 years, Loftus has developed textbook content with an emphasis in history and 20th century culture for McGraw-Hill, and has also written extensively for Decider/New York Post, covering movies, music, celebrity goings-on, and television.

Education

While pursuing his bachelor of arts in history at Grand Valley State University, Johnny's emphasis was in long form writing and the research method. But he was also the music director of WCKS-AM while at GVSU, and that work kept him keyed in to every burgeoning trend in music and media.
