Writers Guild Awards 2019: Nominees Include A Quiet Place, Black Panther

The Writers Guild of America announced on Monday the list of nominees for its upcoming awards ceremony, scheduled to air on Sunday, February 17. Included on the list are films and television series that have made huge waves this year — like John Krasinski's horror breakout A Quiet Place and Marvel Studios' record-smashing superhero film Black Panther, the former of which earned a nomination for Best Original Screenplay and the latter of which scored a nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Contending with A Quiet Place for Best Original Screenplay are Bo Burnham's touching directorial debut Eighth Grade and the Golden Globe-winning films Green BookRoma, and Vice. Up against Black Panther in the Adapted Screenplay category are Spike Lee's John David Washington and Adam Driver-led film BlackKklansman, the Nicole Holofcener-written drama Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk, and A Star Is Born, the Lady Gaga-starrer penned by Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, and Will Fetters.

On the television side of things, the WGA nominated The Americans, Better Call Saul, The Crown, The Handmaid's Tale, and Succession for Best Drama Series, and selected Donald Glover's Atlanta, the Bill Hader-topped show Barry, the hilarious and heartfelt Netflix original GLOW, NBC's always-entertaining The Good Place, and the Amazon Prime original series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Best Comedy Series.

Streaming sites continued to scoop up accolades down the list of 2019 Writers Guild Awards nominees, with Netflix's The Haunting of Hill HouseManiacOrange Is the New Black, Santa Clarita Diet, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt all earning nods in different categories. Hulu's Castle Rock picked up one as well, as did its Elisabeth Moss-led drama series The Handmaid's Tale

Many are taking Black Panther's nomination here as a sign that the MCU movie's chances at earning an Academy Award nomination this year are getting better by the minute. We don't disagree, and we'd certainly be thrilled to see the superhero film soar to new heights by taking home a shiny gold Oscar on Sunday, February 24 — especially after the film left the 2019 Golden Globes empty-handed. For now, though, we're going to focus on the Writers Guild Awards, crossing our fingers, toes, legs, and arms in hopes that Black Panther will earn the Best Adapted Screenplay accolade on February 17.
