Tessa Thompson Cast In Disney's Lady And The Tramp Remake
Luck be a Lady, and her name is Tessa Thompson.
Collider announced on Tuesday that Thompson is in negotiations to star as Lady in Disney's remake of Lady and the Tramp.
Thompson is in talks to provide the voice for the anthropomorphic American Cocker Spaniel, while The Leftovers and The Girl on the Train star Justin Theroux will voice the scruffy stray mongrel the Tramp.
Where Lady lives a cushy life with a well-off family, the Tramp roams the streets, gets by on scraps of food from a local Italian restaurant, and hangs with the equally down-at-the-heel dogs Peg, a Pekingese, and Bull, an English bulldog. Eventually, Lady and the Tramp meet, share a spaghetti sauce-covered smooch, and fall in love — the same ooey-gooey stuff featured in the original film.
Rounding out the voice cast are Doctor Strange actor Benedict Wong as Bull and Emmy-nominated Extras star Ashley Jensen as Jackie, a Scottish Terrier and Lady's best friend who was originally called Jock in the 1955 animated classic. Dope actress Kiersey Clemons will portray Darling, Lady's human owner, in a live-action performance.
Having starred alongside Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler's Creed, as Valkyrie in director Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok (which radically changed the face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), on HBO's twisty-turny sci-fi Western series Westworld, and in Alex Garland's Annihilation, Thompson has been on a hot streak that's only growing stronger as years go by. Currently, she can be seen in Boots Riley's directorial debut Sorry to Bother You, already considered one of the best movies of 2018, and will next appear in Creed 2, due out on November 21. Thompson recently scored the lead role opposite her Ragnarok co-star Chris Hemsworth in Sony Pictures' Men in Black spin-off film.
Suffice to say, Thompson has had no want for work and has faced no shortage of critical acclaim. Still, her top-lining the Lady and the Tramp remake is quite exciting, as it marks her first voice role in a feature film. Back in 2016, Thompson voiced Tanisha on an episode of BoJack Horseman.
Directed by The LEGO Ninjago Movie filmmaker Charlie Bean, the new Lady and the Tramp blends live-action with CGI elements — but fans won't get to see it in theaters. The film is expected to debut on Disney's upcoming (and still unnamed) streaming service sometime in late 2019.
