The AHS: Roanoke Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign
For season after season, "American Horror Story" has doled out generous helpings of horror, humor, vivid characterizations, and camp set in every corner of American mythology — from clown cults to alien conspiracy theories. Of all of the delightfully bonkers tales this anthology series has delved into over the years, one of the most batty is Season 6's "American Horror Story: Roanoke," which spins a yarn around the lost 16th-century English colony that disappeared from North Carolina in 1585.
But it's not the subject matter that makes "Roanoke" one of the darker seasons of "AHS" -– it's the exploration of how media changes a story, and how, in turn, viewers' understanding of that story can also shape reality. Told through dramatic reenactments and the recollections of married couple Shelby and Matt Miller, the first half of the season is depicted via the story-within-the-story documentary "My Roanoke Nightmare." When the format later switches, the Millers and their actor doppelgängers are brought together for a blood moon reunion at the Roanoke house, where the events of the in-canon sequel "Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell" takes place.
"Roanoke" deals more heavily with the theme of identity than any other "AHS" entry, refracting the Millers' experiences through actors' interpretations, fandom, news media, court TV, CCTV, and YouTube culture in a labyrinthine exploration of the Observer Effect. Whether you're a centuries-old woodland demon or a doomed TV producer, controlling the narrative is easier once you understand your own identity –- or at least the one you want to project. Keep reading to find out which "AHS: Roanoke" character you are based on your zodiac sign.
Aries: Scáthach
If you celebrate your birthday between March 21 and April 19, it's time to channel your inner Druidic deity because your Aries "American Horror Story: Roanoke" character is the forest witch Scáthach (Lady Gaga), whose character draws on ancient Celtic mythology. Scáthach has the ancient gods on her side, as symbolized by the animal skull crown on her head. Never one to shy away from a challenge, this headstrong Aries stows away on a 14th-century ship bound for America. When a group of soldiers try to burn her as a witch, this powerful fire sign summons the ancient gods to aid her escape, leaving a trail of death in her wake.
The independent Scáthach resides alone in the wilderness until the day she encounters Tomasyn White, who was exiled and left for dead by her colony. With her signature Aries flair for the dramatic, Scáthach takes the opportunity to elevate herself to cult leader, transforming Tomasyn into the Butcher and forcing the colonists to conduct October blood moon sacrifices for all of eternity. The bloodthirsty Aries also has a powerful sex drive, making her a force to be reckoned with for any man she sets her sights on.
Taurus: Mama Polk
For "American Horror Story" fans born between April 20 and May 20, your Taurus "American Horror Story: Roanoke" character is Mama Polk (Robin Weigart). Earthy Taurus bulls tend to be homebodies, and Mama Polk and her brood never stray far from their cannabis farm. Unlike those fancy city folk who try to encroach on her land, this Roanoke bull doesn't need a lot of fancy duds; her signature look is part "Deliverance," part Hansel and Gretel witch chic. As a Taurus, Mama Polk is built to withstand tough times, weathering hardships with her signature jerky recipe (the special ingredient is Elias Cunningham). With hobbies that include knife-sharpening and keeping it in the family, Mama Polk could show Darlene Snell a thing or two.
This domineering matriarch prefers to have things a certain way, and anyone who doesn't follow her rules is likely to end up on the menu next. Like other Taurus folks, she doesn't have many relationships, but the ones she does have are important. As Shelby and Matt Miller learn when they have Mama Polk's feral grandchildren picked up by CPS, messing with this bull's family is sure to bring out her horns — or at the very least, a hammer to the ankle. Always remember: If ya ain't Polk, ya ain't people.
Gemini: Cricket Marlowe
"American Horror Story" fans who wear the sign of Gemini (May 21 to June 20) should relate to medium Cricket Marlowe (Leslie Jordan). The zodiac's first air sign is always interested in learning and experiencing new things, and that's certainly the case with Cricket. He seems to be powerfully tapped into the spirit realm, and like fellow medium Billie Dean Howard (Sarah Paulson) of "Murder House" and white witch Misty Day (Lily Rabe) of "Coven," Cricket protects himself with a "white light of protection." The medium isn't all goodness and light, however. As a Gemini, he can't help his more opportunistic tendencies — a trait that gets him into trouble with Matt when the medium quotes a $25,000 fee for finding Flora.
Despite being wrongly taken for a fraud, Cricket is the genuine article. Geminis are often misunderstood, and it doesn't help that they often surround themselves with a protective bubble of sarcasm and tend to use humor as a shield. Playful and sociable Gemini though he is, Cricket's charm only gets him so far in life — a reality that becomes all too clear when he meets his end as a sacrifice to the Witch of the Woods herself.
Cancer: Lee Harris
"American Horror Story: Roanoke" fans born under the sign of Cancer (June 21 to July 22) should identify with ex-cop Lee Miller Harris (Adina Porter). Lee has a painful past that she tends to be fairly private about, as Cancers tend to be. Responsible and dependable, this Cancer pours herself into her police work after losing her first child, Emily. She later remarries and gives birth to a second child, Flora. Sadly, her life starts to fall apart when she falls into a trap of addiction after getting shot in the line of duty.
Despite the challenges of her past, Lee remains tough and resilient. She's committed to her sobriety and only briefly falls off the wagon in the Roanoke house. As a Cancer, Lee is loyal to a fault, moving into the Roanoke house at Matt's request and remaining there long after it's clear she isn't safe. Cancers are fiercely protective of their loved ones, and for Lee, that means doing whatever it takes to keep Mason from taking Flora from her — even making her own blood moon sacrifice.
Leo: Sidney Aaron James
If you're a Leo (July 23 to August 22), you may identify with one of the skeeziest characters in the "American Horror Story: Roanoke" world: "My Roanoke Nightmare" producer Sidney Aaron James (Cheyenne Jackson). Like all fire signs, Sidney has a huge personality and loves to make big splashes. In his case, that splash is a reality series that milks every potential drop out of the Millers' hellish Roanoke experience. As a Leo, Sidney can't help his natural tendency to play games, and he loves toying with others much as a lion loves toying with its prey. Sidney repeatedly manipulates the cast of "Return to Roanoke: Three Days in Hell" in any way he can, from boobie-trapping the house with ersatz paranormal activity to pushing Dominic into a dangerous role as the home-wrecking villain.
This fiery foe may not wield a hatchet, but his cameras can be just as destructive, and he dominates the production by placing them everywhere — even in the tunnels of the house. Ultimately, in true Leo fashion, Sidney's ego and ambition prove to be his demise. He continues to ignore the troubling signs playing out on his cameras and ends up killed outside his own production trailer. But since it made for great TV, we can only assume Sidney would have been more than happy to make the sacrifice.
Virgo: Edward Phillipe Mott
If your birthday falls under the sixth zodiac sign, between August 23 and September 22, it's time to powder your wig and get all decked out in your frilliest brocade and lace. As a brightly shining Virgo, your "AHS: Roanoke" character is the prissy but prickly Edward Phillipe Mott. Virgos excel at many things, but letting others know how they've failed in life is chief among them, and Mott is no exception. An arrogant 18th-century fop who abandoned his family to live in a custom-built Roanoke home with his art and his lover, Guinness, Mott is incredibly critical of others and wields his power as a wealthy aristocrat with no regard for the feelings of others.
Mott's Virgo eye for detail is exceptional, as shown in his appreciation for fine art, Shaker architecture, and decadent clothing. Despite his difficult personality, Mott does end up redeeming himself for past sins like abandoning his family and locking his servants in the root cellar, where they die slow and horrible deaths. The misanthropic aristocrat ultimately proves more than eager to help folks escape through his secret tunnels -– anything to keep more souls from piling up on the house's list of ghostly residents.
Libra: Dominic Banks
For "American Horror Story: Roanoke" fans who cut their birthday cakes between September 22 and October 23, their Libra spirits will identify with go-getter actor Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Mostly unknown before he was cast as Matt on "My Roanoke Nightmare," Dominic is a man of intense ambition. As a Libra, Dominic excels when it comes to charm and romance, and he manages to lay on enough of both to make a mess of Shelby and Matt's marriage. Libras tend to be peaceful until they're pushed too far — a trait Dominic demonstrates when Matt attacks him upon arrival at the Roanoke house.
Represented by the scales, Libras tend to see both sides of every story, which is probably why Dominic is among the first to believe Shelby and Matt aren't lying about the Roanoke house being haunted. And despite his original eagerness to participate in tanking the Millers' marriage for ratings and fame, he ends up showing his caring side when Shelby is seriously wounded by the Butcher, remaining by her side until she takes her own life. Libras also never like to be alone — an interesting trait given that leaving Audrey and Lee is exactly what gets Dominic killed at the hands of the Piggy Man.
Scorpio: Agnes Mary Winstead
If you blow your birthday candles out between October 23 and November 22, your "AHS: Roanoke" character is murderous method actor Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates). Like her fellow Scorpios, Agnes has plenty of complex traits. Layered and intelligent, Agnes brings a level of nuance to her performance in "My Roanoke Nightmare" that earns her a Saturn Award. But Agnes is almost too perfect for her role as the Butcher, profoundly connecting with the murderous apparition from before she's even cast. That may be because, for Scorpios, emotions tend to run very deep and can become obsessive if they get out of control.
That's exactly what happens with Agnes when she inhabits the role of Tomasyn White, delving deep into the character until her own personality and the Butcher's become intertwined. This leads her to terrorize tourists on Hollywood Boulevard. Hot-tempered Scorpios can also become resentful and aggressive when they feel betrayed, and Agnes is no exception. After Sidney refuses to sign her to the "Roanoke" reunion — instead slapping her with a restraining order — the homicidal actor surprises him with a reunion of her own, and it's a bloody one.
Sagittarius: Monet Tumusiime
If you're a Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21), you likely identify with the "American Horror Story: Roanoke" character Monet (Angela Bassett). Cast in the role of Lee for show-within-a-show "My Roanoke Nightmare," Monet is tough as nails. But just like Agnes, she gets so caught up in her performance that it gradually ruins her life. In Monet's case, the role leads to struggles with alcohol as she takes on Lee's own demons. The performance also leads her to conclude that Lee was guilty of Mason's murder — a belief that the blunt and frequently tactless actor openly proclaims to anyone willing to listen, including Lee herself.
Sagittarians can be impulsive and rash, but those same traits that can self-sabotage them also often help them sail through life's obstacles. In Monet's case, those obstacles are too numerous to count, but they include Agnes Mary Winstead and the Polks. Unfortunately, her talkative and brash Sagittarius nature eventually gets the better of her, leading to a violent confrontation with an incensed Lee.
Capricorn: Tomasyn White
Horror fans born under the sign of Capricorn (December 22 to January 19) have a lot in common with one of the most powerful villains in the "American Horror Story" universe: Tomasyn White, the Butcher of Roanoke (Susan Berger). Much more than just a malevolent spirit decked out in a stomacher and an Elizabethan ruff, Tomasyn is a complex character who once bore the weight of the world on her shoulders. If "AHS" has taught us anything, it's that women who have to handle men's nonsense tend to snap epically, and Tomasyn is a prime example of that. With her governor husband away on a supply run while the colony's struggling to survive, Tomasyn's opinionated Capricorn ways get the better of her, leading to a mutiny and ultimately getting her exiled in a scold's bridle. Since nobody can hold a grudge quite like a Capricorn, Tomasyn is more than happy to bring down the wrath of the old gods on her enemies after selling her soul to Scáthach in the wilderness.
Like all Capricorns, Tomasyn is excellent at compartmentalization, easily putting her personal feelings and any sense of morality aside to kill for Scáthach and even sacrificing the children of the colony to sanctify the land. Although she tends to be all work and no play, the Butcher can never be accused of laziness, as she never misses a blood moon sacrifice.
Aquarius: Audrey Tindall
For "American Horror Story: Roanoke" fans who celebrate their big days between January 20 and February 18 and bear the sign of Aquarius, the posh British actress Audrey Tindall (Sarah Paulson) is their zodiac avatar. Aquarius is known for unconventional thinking and a free-spirited approach to life — traits that sweet Audrey exudes at every turn, from her bohemian fashion sense to her whimsical outdoor wedding. It's little wonder that Rory fell for her, as Aquarians are known for being excellent at love and are generally quite charming.
Of course, Aquarians like Audrey can also be a bit difficult to handle and have a reputation for tactlessness, which Audrey is certainly guilty of from time to time. A deeply passionate person, Audrey can also get caught up in her feelings, whether they're feelings of intense romance or of insecurity about the age difference between her and her husband. When push comes to shove, though, those who wear Aquarius can be powerful allies who aren't afraid to put up a fight to help others. Audrey does just that when she teams up with Monet against the cannibalistic Polks.
Pisces: Shelby Miller
Pisces (February 19 to March 20) can be simultaneously childlike and mature beyond their years. Shelby (Lily Rabe) is the very embodiment of this paradox. A romantic water sign, Shelby is drawn as much to the idea of a perfect life with Matt as she is to the man himself. Like other Pisces, she's a natural when it comes to self-care, whether that's cooking herself a fine meal, pouring a glass of wine, practicing yoga, or settling into the hot tub for a soak, which may or may not be interrupted by malevolent forces from the spirit world. She also prefers the quiet life to crowds — a Pisces quality that eventually pulls her away from the city and leads her to the lost colony of Roanoke.
As a Pisces, Shelby can have difficulty discerning reality from fantasy, and it certainly doesn't help that she lives on land where the blood moon compels spirits to embark on murderous rampages. Like other Pisces, Shelby is loyal to a fault, remaining committed to making the house work long after it's clear that things have gone very, very wrong. She even remains committed to making her marriage work long after she spies her husband Matt cavorting with the druid witch Scáthach. Shelby is gentle and friendly to a point, but she can also be capable of great rage. Still, her Pisces sensibilities ultimately win out within her.
