Digger: Everything You Need To Know About The Tom Cruise Movie

Four-time Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu and theater industry savior Tom Cruise may seem either like an odd couple or a match made in heaven. Regardless of your stance, "Digger" will bring the two titans together. Watch Looper's video above to learn everything there is to know about this upcoming dark comedy. 

"Digger" features Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a peerlessly rich and powerful oil man. However, as the first trailer for "Digger" shows, the gig is far from easy. In fact, Mr. Rockwell is dealing with a number of troubles that range from the impending personal tragedy of losing his cherished pet cat to the global problem of a massive natural disaster that's threatening to wreck the entire world. The latter comes with the added problem of Digger's own operations being responsible for the situation. So, soon enough, he's working with President Compson (John Goodman) and others to salvage the situation — while, of course, trying to appear as heroic as humanly possible. 

It's a fun premise that could go a long way toward earning Cruise his first acting Oscar to go with his 2026 honorary one. Even if that doesn't happen, the A-lister is certainly in good company, seeing as "Digger" features a stacked cast that includes Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Emma D'Arcy, Michael Stuhlbarg, and many others.

Tom Cruise is an action star without compare and he's also proven his drama chops many times over. However, many of Cruise's best movies notably feature him playing against his usual protagonist type. From the vampire Lestat in "Interview with the Vampire" to the tormented and exaggeratedly masculine motivational speaker T.J. Mackey in "Magnolia," Cruise is often at his best when he comes with a few twists and surprises. 

As his amazing turns as the white-haired hitman villain Vincent in "Collateral" and the profane "Tropic Thunder" producer Les Grossman show, Cruise has also been known to excel in roles that involve physical transformations. "Digger" certainly allows him to play with this particular aspect of his tool kit. The potential result: teaming up with "Birdman" and "The Revenant" writer-director-producer Alejandro G.
