It: Chapter Two: Alamo Drafthouse To Host 'Clowns-Only' Screenings

Coulrophobics beware — Alamo Drafthouse is continuing its 2017-established tradition by hosting clowns-only screenings of It: Chapter Two.

No, this doesn't mean that your ex-boyfriend who did you wrong and whom you consider a proverbial clown is invited to attend these special showings of Andy Muschietti's hotly anticipated horror sequel. Rather, only those who dress up as actual clowns, with a curly wig and wild makeup and oversized clothing, will be able to watch It: Chapter Two during Alamo Drafthouse's exclusive screenings — you know, just in case the heebie-jeebies Bill Skarsgård's Pennywise inspires aren't enough for you.

Alamo Drafthouse is holding 17 clowns-only screenings in 12 cities across the U.S., starting on Thursday, September 5 (for Thursday night preview screenings) and ending on Sunday, September 8 (the final day of It: Chapter Two's opening weekend).

On September 5, fans in San Antonio, Texas can show up to clowns-only screenings at the Park North and Westlakes Alamo Drafthouse locations; those in Springfield, Missouri can attend the showing at the Drafthouse in their city; and those in Northern Virginia can rock up to the Ashburn or the Woodbridge Drafthouse. The sequel's official opening day of September 6 brings even more exclusive showings of It: Chapter Twoone at the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area; one at the Tempe Drafthouse in Phoenix, Arizona; one at the Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh, North Carolina; and one at the Woodbury Drafthouse in Twin Cities, Minnesota.

Moving onto September 7, the Alamo Drafthouses in Village, Slaughter Lane, Lakeline, and Mueller in Austin, Texas are holding clowns-only screenings; the Westminster Drafthouse in Denver, Colorado is inviting fans dressed up as clowns to witness the newest adaptation of Stephen King's magnum opus; the Chandler Drafthouse in Phoenix, Arizona is holding a special screening; and so is the Drafthouse in Charlottesville, Virginia. Finally, It fans in L.A. can hit up the downtown Los Angeles Alamo Drafthouse on Sunday, September 8 for a clowns-only screening of the sequel.

Alamo Drafthouse held clowns-only screenings of It: Chapter One back in 2017, initially presenting the whole thing as a joke taken too far. The cinema chain snagged the idea from a commenter who suggested in a Facebook comment that there should be male-only showings of Thor: Ragnarok and "a special screening of It that's only for those who identify as clowns" after Alamo Drafthouse announced women-only screenings of Wonder Woman. Cheekily responding to the suggestion, the Drafthouse responded that they "might actually have to steal that idea," and thus the clowns-only screenings were born. Fans took to the event like flies to honey and showed up for It: Chapter One in full clown regalia.

The cast and crew of It: Chapter Two, which picks up 27 years after the events of the first film to follow the adult Losers' Club as they return to Derry and attempt to defeat It once and for all, have reiterated that the sequel will be bigger, bloodier, and more brutal that its predecessor. Knowing that there's a solid chance the horror film will keep them up through the night, moviegoers might want to have at least a little fun by dressing up as a clown while they get scared silly.

It: Chapter Two floats into theaters on September 6. Tickets for Alamo Drafthouse's clowns-only screenings of the film are on sale now.
