SAG Awards 2019: Complete List Of Winners

On Sunday, January 27, the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists held its 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honoring the best feature films and television series of 2018.

In a history-making move, Marvel StudiosBlack Panther took home the top prize of the evening, earning the award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture — the SAG-AFTRA equivalent to an Academy Award for Best Picture. With that SAG Award, two People's Choice Awards, five Saturn Awards, and seven Oscar nominations, Black Panther is well on its way to becoming a serious contender to sweep the 91st Academy Awards in February. It will compete with BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, A Star Is Born, and Vice for Best Picture, but that it already beat out BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born, and the beloved-but-not-Oscar-nominated Crazy Rich Asians at the 2019 SAG Awards is promising for those on #TeamBlackPanther for the 2019 Oscars.

Bohemian Rhapsody actor Rami Malek, who portrayed late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the musical biopic, trumped Vice actor Christian Bale, who was completely unrecognizable as Dick Cheney in the Adam McKay comedy-drama. Malek scored the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role — an accolade that, throughout this awards season, Bale has won many a time, once beating Malek out. It happened at the Critics' Choice Awards, when Bale bested Malek after both took home Golden Globes in separate categories. It remains to be seen whether Malek will turn his Best Actor SAG award into a Best Actor Oscar, though it appears, based on chatter amongst film junkies, that Malek could be the frontrunner. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, of the 24 past winners of the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role SAG Award, only five didn't go on to win the Oscar in the same category. Malek's chances of Oscar gold look higher than ever following the 2019 SAG Awards.

Glenn Close won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, for her performance as Joan Castleman in The Wife. Like Malek, Close is also in the running for an Oscar, nominated for Best Lead Actress alongside Yalitza Aparicio (Roma), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). Close already beat out Colman, Gaga, and McCarthy at the 2019 SAG Awards, so who's to say she can't do it again at the Academy Awards?

As for supporting stars, Emily Blunt took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, earning the prize for her turn as Evelyn Abbott in A Quiet Place. Co-written and directed by Blunt's real-life husband John Krasinski, who stars opposite her in the film, A Quiet Place was one of the very best horror films of 2018, and it's lovely to see it earn the recognition it deserves — if only through the actors who brought the story to life. Interestingly enough, Blunt was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role after dazzling as the new Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins Returns — a role that didn't earn her a win at the 2019 SAG Awards, clearly, and one that failed to score a nod from the Academy for Best Lead Actress.

Green Book actor Mahershala Ali scooped up the accolade for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in the Peter Farrelly comedy-drama. Ali, who previously won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, earned the SAG Award for his turn as renowned pianist Dr. Donald "Don" Shirley opposite Viggo Mortensen's bouncer-slash-bodyguard-slash-driver Tony "Lip" Vallelonga.

Elsewhere in the film categories, Black Panther also scored the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture award, besting Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the WaspThe Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The Chadwick Boseman-led superhero flick successfully won both awards for which it was nominated at the 2019 SAG Awards.

Shifting over to television, Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel landed three awards: one to Rachel Brosnahan for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, one to Tony Shalhoub for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, and the final big one for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

This Is Us took home the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, while Ozark lead Jason Bateman and Killing Eve stunner Sandra Oh earned respective Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series awards.

As far as TV movies and limited series go, Darren Criss continued his awards season hot streak, earning yet another Best Actor award for his performance as the murderous Andrew Cunanan in FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Patricia Arquette also landed the prize for Best Actress for her role in Escape at Dannemora
