Avengers: Infinity War Scores Multiple Nominations For 2019 Visual Effects Society Awards

Avengers: Infinity War crushed the hearts of Marvel fans around the world last year, and this year, it's crushing awards season by scoring multiple nominations for the 2019 Visual Effects Society Awards, which were announced on Tuesday, January 15 (via The Hollywood Reporter).

In total, the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed superhero ensemble earned six nominations: Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature; Outstanding Animated Character in a Photoreal Feature, for the design of Josh Brolin's purple-skinned intergalactic despot Thanos; Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project, for the Nidavellir Forge Megastructure; Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature, for Thanos' home planet of Titan and for Black Panther's (Chadwick Boseman) technologically advanced country of Wakanda; and Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature, also for Titan.

Trailing close behind Infinity War in number of 2019 Visual Effects Society Awards nominations are Ready Player One and Incredibles 2, both of which earned five nods.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Ernest Cline's novel of the same name, Ready Player One scooped up nominations for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, Oustanding Animated Character (Art3mis), Outstanding Created Environment (the Overlook Hotel from The Shining), Outstanding Virtual Cinematography (the New York Race), and Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project (the DeLorean DMC-12).

As for the Incredibles sequel, the Visual Effects Society nominated it for Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature, Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature (Helen Parr/Elasti-Girl), Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature (the Parr House), Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project (the Underminer Vehicle), and Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also scored a few nominations, getting praise for its design of Miles Morales (voiced by Shamiek Moore). This is yet another nomination that will help Spider-Verse on its path to a potential Academy Award nomination in a few weeks.

Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, featuring the voice of Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular mean green one, earned four nominations, as did Ralph Breaks the Internet. The sequel flick Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom took in three nominations, while Damien Chazelle's First Man and the Jason Momoa-starring DC Comics movie Aquaman both earned two.

Surprisingly, Black Panther didn't receive a single nomination for the upcoming Visual Effects Society Awards. This could be because Infinity War was nominated for its design of Wakanda, which is where Black Panther takes place, but it's odd nonetheless — particularly because so many are predicting the film will earn an Oscar nod for Best Visual Effects. (For what it's worth, Black Panther also made it onto Oscars shortlists for Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, and Original Song.)

Where television series are concerned, the sci-fi show Lost in Space topped the list of nominees with six nods (Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode; Outstanding Animated Character in an Episode or Real-Time Project; Outstanding Created Environment in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project; Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Episode; and two in the Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode, Commercial, or Real-Time Project category). Netflix's Altered Carbon and Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale did well also, both earning three nominations. Cycles scored three too, with The Deuce and Amazon's The Man in the High Castle earning two each.

With another six nods tucked under its metaphorical belt, Avengers: Infinity War is heading toward Oscar territory — and fast. There's a strong chance the film will earn a nomination in the Best Visual Effects category, as well as for Best Original Score. It would be amazing to see a Marvel movie take home the golden guy, but for now, we're thrilled that the Visual Effects Society has so recognized Infinity War in such a big way.
