The Groot Line From The Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Trailer That Means More Than You Think

The first trailer for Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" finally dropped on Thursday, December 1, to much fanfare and excitement. However, not everything is rainbows and butterflies in James Gunn's universe, and if you listen carefully toward the end of the new trailer, there's a specific line from Groot (Vin Diesel) that possibly hints at this.

For those who haven't seen it, Marvel's first preview for the third "Guardians of the Galaxy" installment covers a wide range of storylines and characters — some familiar, and others not. All of the main movers and shakers from the previous movies are there, along with some new faces, like Will Poulter's Adam Warlock. The last time we saw the Guardians was in "Thor: Love and Thunder," in which they teamed up with Chris Hemsworth's Avenger to form the Asgardians of the Galaxy at the start of the film.

Toward the end of the new "Vol. 3" trailer, Marvel fans are treated to an epic moment between Vin Diesel's Groot and another Guardian team member, with Groot uttering a phrase that could spell a grim end for one of our heroes.

'We are Groot!' may be the last words some Guardians of the Galaxy ever hear

Out of all the things that people likely missed in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" trailer, it was the familiar and foreboding phrase "We are Groot!" — uttered by Vin Diesel's beloved tree creature during an intense action sequence with Chris Pratt's Star-Lord at the very end of the trailer — that may have the biggest impact and meaning. The line is not only highlighted in the trailer as a powerful omen to the Guardians of the Galaxy's last cinematic ride together, but it's also being used by James Gunn on Twitter to tease Marvel fans.

"On May 5 we fulfill the promise," Gunn tweeted on December 1, the day the "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" trailer dropped. "The completion of the trilogy; the end of an era. The last ride," he said, concluding his message with Groot's ominous phrase. For fans, hearing "We are Groot!" in the trailer — after so many emotionally-charged scenes were shown throughout the preview — was truly something else.

Twitter user @godblessgamora shared images of Star-Lord and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) having breakdowns in the trailer and said: "Both of them screaming and crying like someone is being killed in front of them and they put 'we are groot' over that scene?? I AM SHAKING RIGHT NOW." User @vicious696 tweeted: "Hearing We Are Groot got me." Some people speculated that the line and moment with Star-Lord, where Groot and him are surrounded by bad guys, comes right after the death of another Guardian — possibly Rocket (Bradley Cooper) or Drax (Dave Bautista).

"I just have a feeling that Groot says 'we are groot just after rocket dies," wrote Twitter user @OMG_madness

Others think that it could be a sign that Groot will once again bite the dust the same way his father did in the first "Guardians of the Galaxy." One Marvel fan tweeted: "IF GROOT DIES AGAIN IM DYING WITH HIM."
