Why A Simple Conversation Has The Boys Fans Fearing For Frenchie And Kimiko

Contains minor spoilers for "The Boys" Season 3, Episode 4

Season 3 of dark superhero comedy "The Boys" premiered on June 3, and seems to have become a big deal right off the bat. Whereas during its second season, "The Boys" became the first non-Netflix show to premiere on Neilsen's Top 10 streaming service originals (via Business Insider), Season 3 was a critical darling upon its release. In short, critics near-universally praised "The Boys" Season 3 in their initial reviews, netting it a 96% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes and indicating that Amazon's flagship superhero comedy may well be near the pinnacle of the superhero genre for the time being.

Of course, as often tends to be the case with such critically-acclaimed dramas, "The Boys" appears entirely ready to shake up its status quo during its third season. For instance, a new character pairing became an instant hit upon the season's debut, suggesting that more this duo could be in the series' future. Plenty of brand new characters appear in this latest season as well, including new superheroes like Crimson Countess (Laurie Holden) and Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles).

While these additions amount to net positives, if past seasons are any indication, Season 3 will likely see certain characters' lives upended too. Now, one scene in Season 3, Episode 4 has fans particularly worried about the fates Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara).

Frenchie and Kimiko discuss their future, which usually means death

In "The Boys" Season 3, Episode 4, Frenchie and Kimiko, who are both longtime members of the series' titular team, vow to retire from their violent superhero work after the completion of an ongoing mission. Kimiko even teases an idyllic future in which she and Frenchie live in pastoral Marseilles, France. As seasoned TV and movie watchers are likely well aware, the desire to live a quiet life after a dangerous mission typically foreshadows a character's death.

A number of users online discussed the possibility that Frenchie and/or Kimiko will die soon in a Reddit thread about the episode after its premiere. User drunkwhilewalking opened the discussion by writing, "Death Flags for Frenchie, so many death flags." User Hi_Im_zack then countered that this could be a subversion of the usual convention, replying, "I think the writers are way smarter than that and probably used the trope as a red-herring."

On Twitter, meanwhile, among a number of other users worried about the pair, user @deanwspie wrote, "the SECOND kimiko and frenchie started talking about their happy ending I knew something would happen..."

For now, fans will have to wait until "The Boys" Season 3, Episode 5, which premiers on June 17, to find out whether or not Frenchie and Kimiko will live for the foreseeable future.
