Atypical Renewed For Second Season At Netflix
Netflix has renewed Atypical for a second season, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The order calls for an expanded 10-episode run, two more than its first season pick-up.
Created, written, and executive produced by How I Met Your Mother and Will & Grace creative Robia Rashid, Atypical tells the coming-of-age story of 18-year-old Sam Gardner (played by United States of Tara star Keir Gilchrist), a young man on the autism spectrum who's journeys toward self-discovery, independence, and love. As Sam makes his way to achieving all those things, his family struggles with the changes in their own lives, and the entire Gardner household must find out what it truly means to be "normal."
Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport play Sam's parents, Elsa Gardner and Doug Gardner, with Brigette Lundy-Paine portraying Sam's sister, Casey Gardner, and Amy Okuda taking on the role of Sam's therapist and love interest, Julia Sasaki. Graham Rogers as Casey's boyfriend, Evan Chapin; Nik Dodani as Sam's best friend, Zahid; Raúl Castillo as Nick; Jenna Boyd as Paige Hardaway; and Rachel Redleaf as Beth Chapin round out the cast.
Seth Gordon executive produces the dark comedy series though his Sony Pictures Television Studios-based production company, with star Leigh serving as a producer. University of California Los Angeles doctorate recipient Michelle Dean, who previously worked at the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment and later joined the faculty at California State University Channel Islands, aided in the series' production to help provide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder.
The first season of Atypical launched on the streaming service on August 11 to mixed but mostly positive reviews. Currently, the show holds a 66 Metascore and an 8.1 user score on Metacritic, and a 77 percent approval rating and a 91 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Atypical joins a string of recently picked-up Netflix series. The company recently gave a two-season order to Ryan Murphy's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series Ratched, and added Damien Chazelle's musical drama The Eddy and a Michael Douglas comedy from Chuck Lore. Netflix also renewed both the critical flop comedy series Friends from College and the generally well-received drama OZARK for second seasons.
