Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Tips Its Hat To An Iconic Film Franchise In CinemaCon Trailer

In 2019, Warner Bros. premiered "Shazam!," a movie that centers on a boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who can transform into the adult hero Shazam! (Zachary Levi) with just one word. With its fantastic balance of comedy and mystical action, "Shazam!" became a box office hit with approximately $365 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). With such an outstanding box office performance, the movie has earned itself a sequel in the upcoming "Shazam! Fury of the Gods."

We already know that the sequel is upping the ante, compared to the first film, with its villains. This time, Shazam will have to deal with Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu), who are the daughters of the Greek God Atlas. But the hero won't be alone against these new threats. Last year, set photos revealed that the old wizard (Djimon Hounsou) that Billy met when getting his powers makes his return. And, of course, Shazam is joined by Team Shazam, his superpowered siblings. It looks like the concept of family will play a key role in "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." And that's fitting because its CinemaCon trailer paid tribute to a long-running film franchise that also believes in that familial power.

Shazam references an essential Fast And Furious theme

In the "Fast & Furious" franchise, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) loves the idea of family just as much as he loves fast and powerful muscle cars. It's such a signature of the series. But for the hero Shazam, it's an important lesson. Reports have come out that the CinemaCon trailer for "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" features a humorous confrontation between Shazam and Hespera that references the "Fast & Furious" theme. "Billy has a dream that Wonder Woman wants to date him," Gizmodo and i09 Senior Reporter Germain Lussier tweeted. "Later, he tells Helen Mirren's character he's seen the 'Fast and Furious' movies, so saving the world is about FAMILY. Then his whole family shows up."

It's a humorous line that also confirms that the sequel will have the same light-hearted feel as its predecessor. Via Deadline, during the trailer reveal, Zachary Levi noted that everyone worked hard on the sequel to maintain the first film's tone. Between dreamy dates with Wonder Woman and the promise of epic battles against some mythical powerhouses, "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" will definitely have its share of jokes and action. There's no official date for when the trailer will drop. However, "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" director David F. Sandberg tweeted that the public trailer will be slightly longer than what was shown at CinemaCon.
