The 'Female John Wick' Movie You Won't Want To Miss

In a world filled with movies about secret agents, superheroes, and whatever the "Fast and Furious" crew's job titles are at this point, the "John Wick" franchise has still managed to become the action movie sensation of the last few years. Since he first rocked the criminal underworld in the 2014 feature that kicked off the franchise, Keanu Reeves' dog-loving assassin John Wick has inspired several similar takes on the action genre — from the hidden Netflix action gem "Polar" to the fascinating "Nobody," which stars none other than Bob Odenkirk of "Better Call Saul" fame.

This recent influx of mysterious everymen who turn out to be lethally capable one-person armies might eventually oversaturate the market, causing the sub-genre to perish as if it tried to steal Mr. Wick's Ford Mustang. However, that time is still far away, seeing as the best may very well be yet to come. What would you say if some of the most awesome actresses out there were cast as members of a secret, all-female assassin society, joining forces to absolutely wreck their enemies? That movie is coming — and, in fact, its first trailer just dropped. Let's take a closer look at the movie many are calling the "female 'John Wick.'"

Gunpowder Milkshake pulls no punches

The first trailer of Netflix's "Gunpowder Milkshake" makes it clear that fans of fast-paced, brutal action are in for a treat when the movie hits the streamer on July 14. The movie stars Karen Gillan (who plays Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) as Sam, a deadly assassin who ends up in hot water with her adopted daughter Emily (Chloe Coleman). Fortunately, Sam isn't the only assassin out there, and she soon teams up with a group led by her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey of "Game of Thrones" and "Judge Dredd" fame). The other members of the team are no less mighty, seeing as they're played by Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gucino. That's a lot of star power — with even more firepower.

A team-up this powerful needs suitably smarmy and dangerous players to go up against. As it happens, "Gunpowder Milkshake" also features acting powerhouse Paul Giamatti, as well as Headey's fellow "Game of Thrones" alum (and the titular character in the upcoming "The Green Knight") Ralph Ineson.

The "Gunpowder Milkshake" trailer's overall "unstoppable assassins versus hordes of villains" vibe has reminded several YouTube commenters about the "John Wick" universe. "John Wick + Bird of prey = this movie," one commenter wrote. Another added, "Getting John Wick vibes — female John Wick. Looks Awesome."

Many Twitter users seem to agree. "PSA: 'John Wick' is no longer just a movie. It is now a genre," @RameezKhanSA tweeted about the trailer. Meanwhile, Twitterer @BlackMajikMan90 went even further in their comparisons. "'Gunpowder Milkshake' looks like a dash of 'John Wick' mixed with a sprinkle of 'Birds of Prey', served with a side of 'Atomic Blonde'," they tweeted. "This looks amazing and I'm all in." Looking at the trailer and the stellar cast, it's incredibly easy to get behind that sentiment.

"Gunpowder Milkshake" will be available for streaming on Netflix on July 14.
