Marvel Fans Are Getting Nostalgic On Avengers: Endgame's Second Anniversary

Two years ago today, one of the biggest comic book movies and crossover events of all time hit theaters — and fans are looking back fondly.

The direct sequel to Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover "Avengers: Infinity War," which was released in 2018, "Avengers: Endgame" closed out the two part saga on April 26, 2019, giving fans the closure they needed after witnessing Thanos' (Josh Brolin) life-erasing snap at the close of "Infinity War." During the epic conclusion of "Endgame," the Avengers and their allies finally bring Thanos' reign of terror to an end and return their loved ones... but in the process, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) — spoiler alert — sacrifices his life to save the world, and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) sets aside his role as Captain America to travel through time and reunite with his long-lost love.

These days, movie theaters are still largely closed thanks to the COVID-19 crisis, driving fans to fondly remember this incredible moviegoing experience on Twitter. Here's how Marvel fans are remembering "Avengers: Endgame" on its second anniversary.

Avengers: Endgame still strikes a chord with fans two years later

Fans took to Twitter today to express their adoration for "Endgame," with most fans celebrating the film's most iconic moment by far: the scene where Captain America finally proves he's worthy of Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) mighty hammer. In the aftermath of the film's release, videos circulated of fans absolutely losing their minds when Cap catches Thor's hammer during the final battle — and in the absence of movie theaters nowadays, fans miss that sense of community more than ever.

"Happy 2 year anniversary to #AvengersEndgame and for giving us one of the most memorable movie experiences ever," @KaitlynRedWing tweeted, including a clip of the famous moment. Writer Jemele Hill agreed, writing, "'Avengers: Endgame' was released two years ago today. I was lucky enough to attend the premiere .... It remains the greatest theatre experience I've ever had. If you get a chance, you should watch clips with the audience reaction. Amazing."

Meanwhile, some fans were still feeling the pain of some of the film's more dramatic moments, like @TrivectaMusic: "Y'all out here going about your lives and meanwhile I'm still f**ked up about Avengers Endgame." @NatsMoonlight agreed, posting several photos of Tony and Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff — who also dies during the film — with the caption, "i will genuinely never forgive endgame for taking them away from us."

Perhaps the most touching tribute came from the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, who directed both "Infinity War" and "Endgame." Alongside behind the scenes shots of the movie, the two Tweeted, "2 years since the release of Endgame..." before asking fans which theater they watched the film in for the first time.

Fans won't be able to experience the first-time experience of watching "Endgame" in a theater again, but the movie is streaming on Disney+ for anyone who wants to relive it over and over again any way that they can.
