The Boba Fett Easter Egg You Missed In The Mandalorian 2 Trailer

After months of waiting, on September 16, 2020, Star Wars fans collectively celebrated the first teaser trailer for The Mandalorian's incoming second season. In true Mando fashion, the sneak peek was action-packed, visually stunning, and gave viewers no shortage of Baby Yoda footage to enjoy. It established that the plot of the new season revolves around the little green infant and his Mandalorian caretaker (played by Pedro Pascal) attempting to deliver him to his home — be that his actual planet of origin or that of the less-than-mysterious sorcerers known as the Jedi. Of course, such a journey wouldn't be complete without a few curveballs and detours along the way.

The Mandalorian — whose real name is Din Djarin — and his foundling child may come face to face with some of the galaxy's most high-profile names during season 2. Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze are set to appear on the new season, and speculation has run rampant that even more familiar faces will make their way to live-action on the Disney+ series. Since Lucasfilm announced The Mandalorian, fans have clamored for Boba Fett, the famed bounty hunter who started the Mando craze (despite not being one), to make an appearance at least once during the show's run.

Now, if the eagle-eyed Star Wars fanbase is correct, there's an Easter egg alluding to Boba Fett in the recently released trailer for The Mandalorian season 2.

Boba Fett's helmet and jetpack seemingly make an appearance in The Mandalorian season 2 trailer

A lot happens in The Mandalorian's season 2 teaser trailer, ranging from the appearance of mysterious hooded figures to docile Banthas returning to Star Wars media. As a result of its break-neck pace, there are quite a few blink-and-you'll-miss-it moments that have a lot to say about what this season will entail.

As reported by ComicBook.com, one such moment lasts for just a few frames, during the scene in which someone who appears to be Din Djarin is riding a speeder bike in the middle of a Tatooine-like planet. Many fans on Twitter noticed that on the back of his speeder are a jetpack and a helmet that resemble those worn by Boba Fett.

Should this be true and not just a coincidence, the supposed armor pieces make sense given what happened to Fett at the end of Return of the Jedi. The last fans saw of him, the Sarlacc at the Great Pit of Carkoon swallowed him up, and he never escaped. Not to mention, the jetpack in the teaser trailer dons the same color scheme as the one Boba Fett wore in the sixth installment of the Skywalker saga.

Who's wearing Boba Fett's armor in The Mandalorian season 2 trailer?

The question many have about this possible glimpse at Boba Fett's equipment is who's wearing it, if it's not the man himself. Speculation would lead viewers to believe that he remains dead after his apparent demise on Jabba's sail barge, which would mean that someone came across the helmet and jetpack and chose to take them for reasons unknown. It could be our Mando himself, Din Djarin, but there are reports that someone new will take up Fett's iconic garb in The Mandalorian, at least for a time.

Back in May 2020, the news broke that Deadwood star Timothy Olyphant would join the cast of The Mandalorian season 2 in an undisclosed role. He was spotted on-set in Fett's distinctive gear, suggesting that, whoever Olyphant's character is, he'll take ownership of the discarded armor and masquerade as the bounty hunter. There's actually precedent for this in the current Star Wars canon, as Chuck Wendig's novel Aftermath introduces Cobb Vanth, a Tattooine sheriff who buys the salvaged outfit from some Jawas.

If Fett is actually alive, maybe he'll work alongside Din Djarin to recover his missing gear. Or maybe Djarin will take it upon himself to put a stop to Olyphant's character making a mockery of Mandalorian armor. Time will tell.

Why fans want Boba Fett to return in The Mandalorian

From the moment he first appeared in The Star Wars Holiday Special back in 1978, fans became instantly enamored with the mysterious bounty hunter. His live-action appearances in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi only increased their fascination, despite his limited screentime. This led to countless stories and comics centering on him from the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, which was declared non-canonical when Disney purchased the franchise in 2012. These old tales made Boba Fett the legend fans perceive him to be, and they contribute greatly to how they view him to this day.

As of right now, there's not much in the new chronology regarding Boba Fett, and nothing guarantees his survival post-Return of the Jedi. The Mandalorian can change that and continue his story, and while the show might just be nodding to a fan-favorite character, recent rumblings around the internet point to something more substantial. Between this revelation and the announcement of Temuera Morrison — the actor behind Jango Fett and all of his clones in the prequel trilogy — signing on for The Mandalorian's second season, the return of Boba Fett is likely only a short wait away.

The Mandalorian season 2 is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 30.
