What Marvel Had Planned For Avengers: The Kang Dynasty Before Doomsday

The "Avengers: Doomsday" marketing cycle has been running for so long now that it's almost hard to remember this was not the plan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Multiverse Saga. Remember Kang the Conqueror? Remember Jonathan Majors, and "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania?" Kevin Feige might prefer that you didn't, but a cancellation as big as "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" — the original plan for the crossover — doesn't just vanish. Admittedly, the move to Doctor Doom seems to have been a shrewd one. The character has generated far more fervor among fans than Kang ever did, and when you factor in the convoluted nature of the original multiverse story and the various legal troubles and allegations against Jonathan Majors, the move makes a lot of sense. Still, "The Kang Dynasty" couldn't have been all bad, and enough information has leaked out to give us some idea as to how it may have differed from the big climax we're getting now.

No Fantastic Four or X-Men; a Young Avengers team-up; three simultaneous Kang battles across time and space; these are some of the rumors and reports we've got from the original "Kang Dynasty" plan. With "Avengers: Doomsday" just around the corner, it's the perfect time to dive deeper into what could have been.

The cast of "Avengers: Doomsday" is so massive it's easy to assume it basically includes everyone in the MCU. But this franchise has been around for a long time, and even the most overstuffed roster in blockbuster history can't account for everyone.

Michael Waldron, writer of "Loki" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," was the original scribe of "The Kang Dynasty" and said that there was once a plan to have the Young Avengers unite to fight a specific Kang variant. The MCU has teased the team of superhero youngsters at various points, most notably at the end of "The Marvels" when Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) pitches the idea (kind of) to Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). As far as we know, the Young Avengers play no role in "Doomsday."

Instead, we're getting the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, some classic Avengers, the Thunderbolts, and the Wakandans and Talokanil as they stood at the end of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." The X-Men and Fantastic Four would not have been part of "The Kang Dynasty," though the MCU as a whole has leaned more into nostalgia crossovers in the years since the success of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and "Deadpool & Wolverine."
