The Real Reason Netflix Canceled Dead Boy Detectives

It had a strong cult following, but a number of factors were stacked against "Dead Boy Detectives," all of which led to it being canceled by Netflix early in 2025. Low streaming numbers were one reason the show's life was cut short, but another was simply the result of changes within DC's Hollywood branch. James Gunn's reboot of the comic book-based cinematic universe affected every lingering property still attached to DC's television brand, and "Dead Boy Detectives" didn't fit in with Gunn's plans for DC's properties. Thus, the series was sold to Netflix and linked directly to the streamer's other DC hit, "The Sandman," just as it is in its comic book continuity. 

The ratings were mediocre for the supernatural epic, which pulled in just 3.1 million streams during its first few days. While it hit No. 2 on Netflix's chart in late April 2024, it quickly fell to third place after its first full week. After it accrued 4.7 million streams total by week two, it fell off hard in its third week, hitting 1.8 million views. It was completely gone from the streamer's ranking system by the fourth week of its existence. 

That, combined with the show's likely large budget, is what probably led to the show's quick death in spite of a strongly positive critical response. During its brief time as a Netflix series, it began to develop a cult following that worked to save it from cancellation. But fans didn't get their way this time, in spite of being so invested in the program.

"Dead Boy Detectives" focuses on Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri). Edwin was murdered in 1916, and Charles died in 1989, both of them having been bullied and tormented by their classmates, and both of them dedicating their afterlives to remaining among the living and solving crimes. They are assisted by Crystal Palace (Kassius Nelson), a medium, and Niko Sasak (Yuyu Kitamura), Crystal's neighbor, who becomes entangled in the boys' cases. Their enemy is Esther Finch (Jenn Lyon), who is seeking revenge on Charles and Edwin for a past incident.

The series was not shopped around following its cancellation, perhaps due to potentially negative publicity in the wake of the assault accusations levied against the comic's co-creator, Neil Gaiman, which ended up having a negative impact on even the mega-popular and heartbreaking "Good Omens."

The show had already suffered through a rocky developmental period; it was picked up by HBO Max in 2021 after a backdoor pilot aired as part of the also-cancelled "Doom Patrol" before being sold off to Netflix in 2023. Since Gaiman's other DC Comics adaptation, "The Sandman," already had a home on Netflix, the switch seemed like a natural move. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but it's always possible that "Dead Boy Detectives" might see some sort of revival somewhere down the line as a cult property.
