Marvel's What If...? Will Add A Twist To The Infinity Saga
Big things are coming with Marvel's What If...?, which will alter the way you view the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Studios announced its forthcoming What If...? animated series at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, where the hallowed house of heroes detailed that the show will travel down roads not taken in the MCU and dive into wacky possibilities for its famous characters. Head honcho Kevin Feige explained at the panel that viewers will get to see "different versions" of "set-in-stone MCU scenes and experiences" on What If...? — and now he's divulged that the series will add a twist to the MCU's Infinity Saga.
Chatting with Screen Rant at Comic-Con, Feige explained that the first season of What If...? is going to focus on the entirety of the Infinity Saga, the 23-movie collection that began with Iron Man and ended with Spider-Man: Far From Home. He teased that there will be one storyline subversion that happens, and What If...? will chronicle how that twist changes the fabric of the Infinity Saga and impacts the heroes who have been a part of it.
"Right now, [what] we're focusing on for the first season [is] everything you know about the 23 movies in the Infinity Saga and adding one twist to them and seeing how everything turns out different," said Feige.
The What If...? comics have explored all sorts of narratives that we've never seen on the silver or small screen before. Dozens of hypotheticals like "What if the Avengers fought evil in the 1950s?", "What if Sgt. Fury had fought World War II in outer space?", "What if Thor and the Avengers fought the gods?", "What if Daredevil became an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?", and many more have been brought to life on the page, but it sounds like the upcoming animated series will focus on just a single twist that is contained to the Infinity Saga — at least for its first season.
What might that twist be? Well, we wouldn't be surprised if it has something to do with the big narrative beats of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Maybe What If...? will explore what would have happened if Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) didn't sacrifice herself so the Avengers could obtain the Soul Stone during their time heist mission, or if Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) didn't do the same to snap away Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his sycophants. Perhaps the animated series will see what life would have been like if Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was successful in his attempt to kill Thanos in Infinity War, or if Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) had merged with the Hulk to become Professor Hulk at the end of Infinity War like he was originally meant to. The possibilities are, fittingly, endless.
