Marvel's What If...? Animated Series Coming To Disney+

Imagine all the possibilities!

Marvel seeks to answer the age-old question "what if?" in its upcoming animated series entitled, well, What If...? — announced during the studio's Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 on Saturday, July 20.

The first-ever animated television series in the Marvel Cinematic UniverseWhat If...? will debut on the Disney+ streaming service (launching November 12) in the summer of 2021.

Though Marvel stayed mum about when exactly Disney+ subscribers can load up What If...? during that sunny season, the studio unleashed a treasure drove of information about the series that will leave fans grinning from ear to ear. (It sure had Hall H rumbling like thunder, we can tell you that for sure.)

Westworld actor Jeffrey Wright will narrate What If...? as the voice of the Watcher, whom he describes as "a non-earthly being who observes all things" (via Entertainment Weekly). Wright added, "He's watching over the multiverse and occasionally may or may not intervene with the doings of earthlings. Other than that, he's off doing his own thing."

Many MCU favorites are coming back to lend their golden voices to the characters you know and love (and fear) for What If...?. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced at the panel that these stars include – deep inhale – Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner (a.k.a. the Hulk), Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Michael B. Jordan as Killmonger, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Taika Waititi as Korg, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, Dominic Cooper as Howard Stark, Neal McDonough as Dum Dum Dugan, Toby Jones as Arnim Zola, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Michael Rooker as Yondu, and Djimon Hounsou as Korath. (And exhale.)

Feige detailed that the What If...? animated series explores the many paths Marvel projects didn't venture down, unraveling all sorts of wacky, wonderfully weird scenarios. The show will stretch across the complete history of the MCU, so viewers are certainly in for a treat. Like the studio head teased during the presentation, "All of those set-in-stone MCU scenes and experiences you've seen before, you will see different versions of them in this."

What If...? is a totally fresh project for Marvel Studios — both in regards to the stories it will tell and the style in which they will be brought to life. In this, the after-Infinity Saga era of the MCU, the hallowed house of heroes has devoted itself to inclusion (which it's doing by introducing more LGBTQ+ characters to the MCU, the first official of which will be Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie in Thor: Love and Thunder), expansion (via a hefty slate of projects coming to the big screen and to Disney+ in 2020 and 2021), and innovation (through this animated show, the first of its kind).

Mark your calendars for the game-changing What If...? series, heading to Disney+ in the summer of 2021.
