Onward Teaser Trailer Reveals Pixar's Newest Fantasy Adventure

Looking for a little magic? Pixar's got just the thing for you. 

On Thursday, the studio unleashed the first teaser trailer for its upcoming fantasy adventure film Onward. 

Featuring the voices of not one but two Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt and Spider-Man favorite Tom Holland, the animated flick centers on teenage elf brothers Barley and Ian Lightfoot and takes place in a magical suburban world in which humans never existed. Creatures of all size, shape, and supernatural ability — from trolls and gnomes to fauns and centaurs to mermaids, trolls, sprites, satyrs, and more — create a reality that's somewhat like our own but altogether mystical. People keep dragons as pets, listen to music, lounge around in their inflatable pools while sipping on cocktails, commute to work, mow their lawns, and try to keep pesky unicorns from digging through their trash. 

As teased in the first-look footage, Barley (Pratt) and Ian (Holland) embark on a quest beyond the borders of their home in New Mushroomton — to "discover if there is still magic in the world." The pair hope to find it somewhere, as magic would allow them to spend another day with their late father, who passed away when both boys were young. 

The teaser for Onward establishes the world more so than it does set up the story, but by the looks of it, it seems that the forthcoming flick will play out like a road trip movie and follow the Lightfoot brothers as they encounter new faces and odd places on their mission to locate hidden caches of magic. 

Pratt and Holland are a dynamic duo, as evidenced by their hilarious interplay in Avengers: Infinity War, so it will be wonderful to hear them as brothers in what's guaranteed to be a soul-warming Pixar offering. Onward director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae bring just as much gusto to the film, which will likely mirror the same mood of Monsters University. Scanlon and Rae previously collaborated on the 2013 animated prequel, a critical hit that was as humorous as it was heartfelt. 

Also featuring the voices of Octavia Spencer and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Onward is scheduled to open in theaters on March 6, 2020.
