Sons Of Anarchy Spinoff Mayans MC Launches First Trailer
Once you're in, there's no out.
After many months spent waiting, the first full-length trailer for FX's Mayans MC has arrived. The network released the footage during the mania of San Diego Comic-Con, gifting fans a full two minutes (and five seconds, but who's counting?) of Sons of Anarchy spinoff goodness.
Set two and a half years after Kurt Sutter's award-winning Sons of Anarchy, Mayans MC takes place in a "post Jax Teller world" where J.D. Pardo's Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes readies to stake his claim on a high-ranking spot in the titular motorcycle club. The series will follow EZ as he establishes a new identity after being released from prison and heading back to the Southern California town where he was once universally adored.
The trailer sets up this basic premise, peppering in flashback sequences of EZ in a Stanford hoodie as well as a few humorous moments — like one character quipping "My bad!" when dropping a dead body down an underground bunker — for good measure.
Like the Mayans MC teaser that launched earlier this year, the trailer is set to a Spanish cover of The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black," which we're definitely going to have stuck in our heads for the rest of the day. (Not that we're complaining, really, because who doesn't love the Stones?)
By the looks of this first trailer, Mayans MC will be to Sons of Anarchy what Better Call Saul is to Breaking Bad: a fully fleshed-out spinoff that honors the groundwork its predecessor set up all while carefully toeing the lines between violence, bad behavior, dark comedy, and deeply personal stories.
Historically, it's been difficult for spinoffs to achieve the same success or settle in with as large an audience that the original series did. Sometimes, they don't make it far enough off the ground to even reach the small screen. But when it comes to Mayans MC, the near-impossible just might become a reality.
Also starring Edward James Olmos, Antonio Jaramillo, Clayton Cardenas, Sarah Bolger, Alexandra Barreto, Raoul Trujillo, Michael Irby, and many others, Mayans MC will air the first installment of its 10-episode freshman season on Tuesday, September 4.
