Avengers: Infinity War Tops Life Of The Party, Breaking In At Weekend Box Office

No surprises here: it was yet another box office win for Avengers: Infinity War, which brought in $61.8 million in its third weekend in theaters. This easily topped the weekend's new releases, the Melissa McCarthy-starring comedy Life of the Party and the Gabrielle Union-starring thriller Breaking In.

Avengers: Infinity War, which unites dozens of the MCU's heroes to face off against Thanos (Josh Brolin),  has been breaking box office records left and right since its late April release. The movie, the fastest to top $1 billion worldwide, had the fourth biggest third weekend of all time, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90.2 million), Avatar ($68.4 million), and Black Panther ($66.3 million). The movie currently sits at $1.606 billion worldwide and $547.8 million domestic. (via Box Office Mojo)

Life of the Party took the second place spot. The comedy stars McCarthy as Deanna Miles, who, shortly after her dropping her daughter Maddie (Molly Gordon) off at college, learns that her husband (Matt Walsh) is leaving her for another woman (Julie Bowen). The upheaval in her life prompts Deanna to return to college alongside her daughter, where she learns to embrace freedom, fun, and frat boys as she comes to terms with herself through a senior year that no one expected.

Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Adria Arjona, Debby Ryan, Jessie Ennis, Jacki Weaver, Stephen Root, Jimmy O. Yang, Luke Benward, Shannon Purser, Heidi Gardner, Nat Faxon, Sarah Baker, and Chris Parnell also star in Life of the Party, which was co-written by McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, who also directed the film. The movie, which has received mostly negative reviews from critics with a 41 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, performed on the lower side of $17 to $22 million expectations.

The film narrowly managed to beat out Breaking In, which performed just below expectations with $16.5 million. Breaking In features Union as single mother Shaun Russell, who takes her two children (Seth Carr and Ajiona Alexus) to her family's Malibu estate after her father's death. However, when the mansion becomes the target of criminals who kidnap Shaun's children, she has to step up and fight back in order to save her family.

Billy Burke, Christa Miller, Jason George, Richard Cabral, Levi Meaden, and Damien Leake also star in the film, which was directed by V for Vendetta's James McTeigue based on a script from Rampage's Ryan Engle. The movie currently sits at a 27 percent on Rotten TomatoesBreaking In and Life of the Party both received a B CinemaScore.
