Solar Opposites Season 4 Release Date, Cast, Trailer, Plot And More Details

Hulu's "Solar Opposites" is arguably one of the funniest mature-themed cartoons on the small screen. Justin Roiland, known for "Rick and Morty," and Mike McMahan, whose credits include "Star Trek: Lower Decks," have created a critically acclaimed (via Rotten Tomatoes) hit for the streaming service. According to Variety, the streamer reported that it was one of the most watched shows on Hulu after it premiered in May 2020, and the sci-fi comedy continues to entertain fans every season.

Many things have ultimately contributed to the success of the series, and there is an array of untold truths regarding "Solar Opposites" that viewers continue to discover every time they watch the show. Among the many reasons that make it so outstanding are the characters. There's no denying that Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Korvo (Justin Roiland) get most of the spotlight on the beloved Hulu title. But some followers of the Schlorpian sitcom think Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) is really superb, and it's not surprising that everyone can't get enough of the Pupa (Sagan McMahan). The sci-fi high jinks and adventures they endure through each well-crafted iteration have made this side-splitting affair a gut-busting experience from start to finish.

After three seasons, fans are most assuredly ready to discover what happens next. Luckily for them, in June 2021, the series was renewed for a fourth season (via Deadline). Here is all of the data out there right now regarding Season 4 of "Solar Opposites."

When will Solar Opposites Season 4 be released?

Fans are probably interested to know when Season 4 of "Solar Opposites" will arrive on Hulu. The good news is that it seems like they will not have to wait very long for the next set of episodes. When talking with MovieWeb in July 2022, Mike McMahan disclosed that Season 4 was almost written and revealed that it takes the talented animators of the well-received series a year to get the show animated. Josh Bycel confirmed this in an interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con. "It takes a year to make a show, and we are already very deep into season 4."

Barring any unforeseen setbacks, it would seem like the next run is set to debut at some point in 2023, which follows the pattern of releases the series has utilized thus far. The first outing came out in May 2020 and the sophomore run premiered in March 2021. Season 3 came out in July 2022, so it roughly takes a year to get viewers new entries to enjoy over and over again. Indeed, in June 2023, Hulu announced that Season 4 of "Solar Opposites" would arrive on the streaming service on August 14, 2023. Additionally, the series has already been renewed for Season 5.

What is the plot of Solar Opposites season 4?

Season 4, in true "Solar Opposites" fashion, will directly pick up where the last season finale left off. The Schlorpian family gave up engaging in sci-fi shenanigans and started to live a normal life for the Pupa. Terry and Korvo were working an office job, and it seems that's where things will begin. Mike McMahan told MovieWeb, "When we start season four, it has become an office show, and it really is a more straight-laced office show. But don't worry, because Terry and Korvo cannot commit to getting that right."

Then, there are the beloved subplots. As far as The Wall goes, many viewers are likely curious about where things are going in that glorious side narrative. McMahan assured fans more is on the way in an interview with Collider at San Diego Comic-Con. "So fourth season, I can tell you, it's Sherry dealing with the rise of the theocracy in the wall ... This next season is kind of a 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' like cold war spy thriller in the wall with the theocracy."

Another storyline that started in Season 3 was the introduction of Silver Cops. Executive producer Josh Bycel confirmed with Collider there would be a lot coming more from the fledgling side story. "Silver cops, which we introduced in Season 3, will also continue. Mike walked in and said, 'I have this idea for Silver Cops, and I have four seasons all ready to go.'" Fans are definitely in for one wild in Season 4 of "Solar Opposites."

Who is starring in Solar Opposites Season 4?

Hulu is all in on the Schloprians and their various pieces of sci-fi stuff. In June 2021, according to TheWrap, the streaming service renewed "Solar Opposites" for Season 4, nearly a year before Season 3 would debut. At the same time, Hulu announced that all four principal voice cast members would return to play weird and prickly aliens for a fourth go-around. Thomas Middlemitch will portray flaky and fun-loving Terry, while Sean Giambrone and Mary Mack will once more portray the aliens' sort-of children, aggressive Yumulack and spacey Jesse. Co-creator Justin Roiland voiced grumpy leader Korvo for the show's first three seasons, a job recast owing to Hulu's firing of the actor, according to Variety, following felony charges of domestic violence. His replacement: Dan Stevens, best known for "Downton Abbey" and "Legion."

It's safe to assume that recurring and supporting cast members will also find time to record some lines for "Solar Opposites" Season 4, among them Sterling K. Brown, Sutton Foster, and Christina Hendricks as captured and shrunken Wall residents Halk, Sister Sisto, and Cherie, respectively, Sagan McMahan as the infantile alien Pupa, and Tiffany Haddish as the extraterrestrials' ship computer, Aisha.

Who are the showrunners for Solar Opposites Season 4?

The toast of the adult animation world following his success with his Adult Swim co-creation, "Rick and Morty," Justin Roiland landed at Hulu with his next big gonzo, comedic sci-fi project, "Solar Opposites." He's a credited co-creator of the alien show, along with Mike McMahan, an executive producer of both "Rick and Morty" and "Solar Opposites." Both Roiland and McMahan can claim a share of multiple Emmy Awards for "Rick and Morty," named Outstanding Animated Program in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

With an assist from Roiland, McMahan helped devise the elaborate world of the "Solar Opposites" and then went on to write several episodes, as has Josh Bycel, a showrunner for the sitcom "Happy Endings" and a former staffer on "The Mindy Project" and "American Dad!" McMahan and Bycel serve as co-showrunners on "Solar Opposites," a job they've held since Season 1 of the series, which debuted in 2020. They'll continue to run "Solar Opposites" in Season 4, and without their previous boss. In January 2023, according to Variety, Hulu dropped all ties with Roiland after the public disclosure of an ongoing felony domestic abuse case involving the creator and voice actor.

Is there a trailer for Solar Opposites Season 4?

On June 20, 2023, Hulu released a promotional video for the upcoming fourth season of its adult animated hit "Solar Opposites," a self-referential (and self-deprecating) acknowledgment of behind-the-scenes controversy — the firing of co-creator and head alien Korvo voice actor Justin Roiland — and how the show plans to move forward. Terry buys the original dartboard from Cheers and in showing it off, nails Korvo with a dart in the throat, spouting alien blood and nearly killing him until Yumyulack can fix it with a healing ray. An irate Korvo chides Terry as he storms off, normal behavior for him, but something has changed "Hey, does Korvo sound off?" Jesse ponders. Indeed — he's got an unmistakable British accent now (provided by new cast member Dan Stevens) and his speech is peppered with British slang. Yumyulack's ray was likely incorrectly calibrated, but Terry orders him not to fix it, as his partner's accent makes him feel "hot and weird." Jesse still thinks the whole situation is strange, but Yumyulack reassures her that, "Nobody's gonna notice."

Having explained away its extremely noticeable cast change, Hulu distributed the first official trailer for the upcoming slate of episodes on July 21, 2023. According to Korvo, life has grown quite tedious, working a regular human office day job to fit in, made all the worse because his boss is Terry. Meanwhile, the Opposites try to do normal things and almost fail every time, like trying to take a family photo, or keeping their baby-like Pupa alive, or taking a road trip without a major explosion. In the words of Terry, the whole theme of this season of "Solar Opposites" is the search for one thing that will unite the displaced space travelers as a family, and that could be the arrival of the Deenosaur, a Dino Flintstone-like friendly dinosaur clone who plays drums in their new family band, Deeno and the Opposites. In addition to that, Season 4 of "Solar Opposites" promises plenty of sci-fi hijinks and comedy nonsense, including significant weather events in The Wall.

Where to watch previous seasons of Solar Opposites

While the wait for Season 4 may seem like waiting for a Pupa to start terraforming a planet for some, there are three seasons plus Christmas and Halloween specials ready to hold followers of the adult-oriented cartoon over before the next chapter arrives. Luckily, no one has to travel to the ends of the galaxy to do so. Fans hoping to relive all the wickedly funny moments from the show, or anyone looking to check out the series for the first time, should know there are a few options out there to choose from in this endeavor.

Regarding streaming, there is only one place where subscribers can watch "Solar Opposites" as part of their subscription plan, and that is Hulu. Every entry is available, along with some extra content, for members to enjoy.
