Why Some Spy X Family Fans Are Concerned About Yuri Briar

"Spy x Family" has emerged as one of the biggest anime hits of the year (via ComicBook.com). As the breakout adaptation of the manga series by Tatsuya Endo, the show follows a phony family that joins forces out of convenience of their lives and to stop a possible war between two nations with long-simmering tensions between them.

Of course, this already out-there premise becomes even more absurd when you realize that Loid/Twilight (Takuya Eguchi/Alex Organ) is a top-secret superspy, Yor (Saori Hayami/Natalie Van Sistine) is a dangerous assassin, and Anya (Atsumi Tanezaki/Megan Shipman) possesses psychic powers. If things weren't complex enough, Yor's brother, Yuri (Kensho Ono/Dallas Reid), also happens to work for the opposing secret service agency to the one that Loid works for. Though Yuri has already shown up to throw a wrench into the family's plans once, fans happen to have their own concerns about the character.

Fans debate whether Yuri could be the villain

On the r/SpyxFamily subreddit, u/TyrionLannister557 asked: "Is Yuri gonna be the main villain of the series?" They went on to point out that the character already considers Twilight his nemesis while also despising Anya and Loid. On top of these factors, it's worth noting that Yuri seems weirdly obsessed with his sister and seems to harbor at least some sort of unhealthy attachment to her. Fans will also recall that the only reason Yor entered into her marriage of convenience was to get her brother to leave her alone a bit more.

The top posts in the thread were quick to disagree with the theory, though. u/elipride, for instance, seemed to think that the character might evolve instead. "I think both him and Yor will mature out [of] their black and white mindset of 'that person is a spy/traitor so they're 100% evil incarnate,'" they said. "I guess he is going to be a rival," wagered u/MattheusSLF. It's very common in anime and manga for the main character to have a rival with whom they occasionally go up against but sometimes join forces.

Meanwhile, u/GelatinPangolin had a different pick for the main antagonist of "Spy x Family." "It's Donovan Desmond. He is the 'goal' of Twilight's mission as of right now; at least getting close to him is." Though Desmond appears very aloof in his file photo, it's certainly possible that he could reveal himself as a more deadly opponent. After all, there has to be a good reason why he's Twilight's target.
