The Attack On Titan Ship That Fans Find Beyond Adorable

"Attack on Titan" has been blazing a hot streak for the last couple of years (via Polygon). As the series heads into the last part of its final season, the ratings and fan engagement for the hit anime have never been more intense. While the last batch of episodes is quickly approaching, there is a ton of things that still need to be resolved.

Specifically, there are a lot of dangling threads in the air when it comes to the relationships at the heart of "Attack on Titan." As Mikasa Ackerman (Yui Ishikawa/Trina Nishimura) looks back on her life, for example, she starts to wonder if she only sees Eren Yeager (Yuki Kaji/Bryce Papenbrook) as a surrogate brother or whether her jealousy of Eren and constant need to see him safe could mean more.

Undoubtedly, many relationship statuses remain unclear even as the series reaches increasingly an apocalyptic state. Does Armin Arlert (Marina Inoue/Josh Grelle) really have feelings for Annie Leonhart (Yu Shimamura/Lauren Landa), or is he simply feeling the residual passion that Bertholdt Hoover (Tomohisa Hashizume/David Matranga) once held for her? Though each of these relationships is certainly compelling, there is an earlier one from "Attack on Titan" that fans are still pining over.

Fans love Historia and Ymir together

On the r/attackontitan subreddit, u/Worldly-Age-5361 asked for fans' opinions on a potential "Attack on Titan" ship, sharing an image of Historia Reiss (Shiori Mikami/Bryn Apprill) and Ymir (Saki Fujita/Elizabeth Maxwell) staring intently at one another. Though it's clear for much of Season 2 of "Attack on Titan" that there's more to their friendship than simple camaraderie, the two never get the chance to consummate their love for one another.

"They're cute and funny," said u/sapphicdavinci in the top-voted comment. "I like when one character is almost aggressively in love with the other." The relationship between the two is often as humorous as it is heartbreaking since the kind, naive Historia and the more cynical, selfish Ymir are often at odds with one another, despite how much they care for each other.

Meanwhile, u/Greavir offered a clever response. "Possible spoiler: Good foreshadowing. Ymir's love their royalty," they said. The comment is an inside joke about how there are two characters in the show named Ymir from different timelines, and how both end up in complicated relationships with royalty.

Finally, one user summed up Ymir's sad fate while pointing out how much they loved the dynamic between the two. "Ymir has such a sad story. I ship these two; their scenes were cute," they offered. "Ymir's letter was wholesome AF while she was busy getting munched by Porco." Sadly, Ymir gives up her life to be devoured by a titan, leaving a farewell letter for Historia as a result.

Historia's voice actor confirmed their love for each other

"I think they're connected by the heart in an emotional way," Historia voice actress Shiori Mikami told SBS. "In the second season, you could really see that they were connected on a deeper level," she continued. As we mentioned above, the two never get the chance to make their love for one another official, so it's nice to see someone from inside "Attack on Titan" confirming their affection for one another.

She went on to allude to the manga for her inspiration in playing Historia. "I did try to take a lot of the readings from that into my preparation," Mikami said of the original work by Hajime Isayama before making a quick clarification. "But also not to think too much into it and try and deliver so that there was clarity in the characters and relationship." Though the bond between the two is ultimately one of sorrow rather than romance, it's evident that fans will never forget what Historia and Ymir once shared.
