The AHS: Hotel Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign

"American Horror Story: Hotel" may have premiered all the way back in 2015, but its memorable ensemble cast of unique and eccentric personalities has kept the underrated fifth season of the popular anthology series very much alive in the eyes of many fans. While the show's main cast is comprised of immortal vampires, deadly serial killers, and vengeful anti-heroes, they are also surprisingly relatable thanks to their complex motivations and realistic desires.

The diversity in backgrounds and motives makes the interplay between the characters all the more interesting, challenging each character to not only fight for control of the Hotel Cortez, but also against their own moral compass, as they try to balance their own desires with what they know is right. This may lead to each viewer relating to some characters over others, depending on their own personal experiences, backgrounds, and maybe even the zodiac sign they were born under.

From Tristan Duffy's reference to James Patrick March's zodiac sign in Episode 3 to the Zodiac Killer's surprise appearance in Episode 4, the zodiac's influence can be felt throughout the controversial season. If this leaves you wondering which of these deeply flawed though impressively compelling characters you are most like, there's no better place to look than each of the astrological signs, as many of the show's biggest characters strongly resonate with one of them.

Aries: John Lowe

Anyone born between March 21 and April 19 is ruled by Aries, the sign of the ram. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, which is fitting since people ruled by Aries are typically known for their brash personalities and are quick to act. Aries tend to be confident, jumping headfirst into everything they do. While an Aries' determined nature and competitive spirit are very admirable, this can also lead to many Aries portraying maverick and rule-breaking tendencies.

No character in "American Horror Story: Hotel" better personifies the nature of an Aries than John Lowe. Early on, John is introduced as if he's the protagonist of the story. Hellbent on using his position as a detective to take down his nemesis, the Ten Commandments Killer, John has no qualms with breaking the rules in order to get the job done. Even after he's fired from his position, John continues to investigate the case, even checking himself into a mental health hospital in Episode 7 in order to get access to a witness he wasn't supposed to see.

John's Aries tendencies continue to shine through after Episode 8, when he's revealed to have been the Ten Commandments Killer all along. His arrogance leads him to believe that his killings are moral and justified, highlighting the perceived evil nature of those he kills. John is nothing if not determined, and his obsession with completing his work is the cornerstone of everything he does.

Taurus: Liz Taylor

Taurus is the second sign of the zodiac, and those born between April 20 and May 20 are ruled under the sign of the bull. In contrast to Aries, Taureans are known for their stable and reliable traits. While those born under the Taurus sign can often be seen as stubborn and uncompromising, they're typically the most grounded and stabilizing figures in the lives of their friends and coworkers.

The character that best personifies these traits in "American Horror Story: Hotel" is Liz Taylor, the Hotel Cortez's front desk clerk and frequent bartender. Viewers quickly learn that Liz is one of the Hotel's most honorable denizens and reliable friends. In Episode 4, following Iris' transformation into a vampire at the hands of her son Donovan, Liz is the one who supports her and helps her through the many new challenges that the disease brings. She's also a regular voice of reason to John Lowe, who often comes to the bar when he feels like he's losing his mind.

Liz's stubbornness and classic Taurus possessiveness can at times get the better of her. Despite knowing the risks of revealing her love of Tristan Duffy to the Countess, her need for him to be her one and only leads her to reveal it anyway, an act which eventually leads to Tristan's death in Episode 6.

Gemini: Ramona Royale

Gemini is the ruling sign between May 21 and June 20. People born under the Gemini sign are known for being curious, with a love of learning and people. Gemini is a social sign, and Geminis tend to have excellent people skills, known for being funny, engaging, and energetic. Additionally, Geminis tend to be very adaptable, often finding ways to mold themselves into any situation or surrounding.

Ramona Royale would probably fit in very well with other Geminis. Prior to being turned into a vampire by the Countess, Ramona was an actor and rising star, having starred in many famous blaxploitation films in the 1970s. In Episode 3, it's revealed that in the late '70s, Ramona tried to move up from B-list films, and while she faced an uphill battle because of her skin color, her electric personality and expert communication skills helped her work her way into the conversation with several directors.

Arguably, however, Ramona's most Gemini trait is her incredible adaptability. Episode 3 also shows that Ramona is turned into a vampire by the Countess in 1977, and she expertly adapts to her new lifestyle out of the spotlight. In Episode 9, when she's been captured by the Countess and left to starve in her "hate watch" chamber, Ramona talks Will Drake into letting her out before turning on him and feeding on his blood to keep herself alive until she's able to escape.

Cancer: Iris

The fourth sign of the Zodiac is Cancer, the crab. Anyone born between June 21 and July 22 will bear the traits of the crab sign. Like many water signs, Cancerians see the world through the lens of their emotional spectrums, and are known for being sympathetic and nurturing. They're also among the most loyal and protective of all signs, making them natural parents or guardians.

Iris personifies the Cancer mindset very well, with much of her identity wrapped up in her motherhood. In the first half of "American Horror Story: Hotel," everything Iris does, including things she considers morally reprehensible, she does because she believes it's in the best interest of her son Donovan. This is such a central part of her character that when Donovan tells her she's a horrible mother in Episode 3, Iris responds by saying that she doesn't know who she is if she's not his mother.

Iris also displays many of the more negative traits associated with Cancerians, such as being moody and emotionally turbulent. Iris is often afflicted by drastic mood swings, which leads to her creating a tribute video to herself that brought fans to tears. Cancerians can be difficult to get to know, and stay in their shells. In Episode 5, while helping Iris through her recent transformation into a vampire, Liz comments that she feels like they're just getting to know each other, despite working together for years.

Leo: The Countess

Anyone born between July 23 and August 22 is a Leo, the lion. Leos are often magnetic personalities, and like many other fire signs, tend to hold a lot of self-confidence. Leos are fueled by their warm energy and colorful personalities. They're the life of the party, and when a Leo enters the room, everyone tends to notice.

The main Leo from "American Horror Story: Hotel" is undoubtedly the Countess. Expertly brought to life by Lady Gaga, the Countess exudes the same confidence, style, and impeccable sense of fashion as the actor, only with a deadly, bloodthirsty vampiric side. Considering that four of the ten main cast characters are in love with the Countess (along with a host of side characters), it's clear just how much power her personality holds over her peers. Leos also have very high standards in everything they do and wear. The Countess is never seen wearing anything but the most unique, high fashion outfits, and her sense of style is one of the season's best elements.

However, the Countess also displays many of the more negative aspects of a Leo, including their often strong jealousy. In Episode 6, when Liz Taylor, whom she has long been close friends with, tells her that she loves one of the Countess' flings, Tristan Duffy, the Countess tells Liz that she doesn't share — and murders Tristan so he can't be with either of them.

Virgo: Hazel Evers

Virgo is the sign that rules from August 23 to September 22. Virgo is an Earth sign, and like other Earth signs such as Taurus and Capricorn, those born under Virgo are known for their practical natures. Virgos tend to be among the hardest working and most pragmatic of any signs in the zodiac. They're also known to be very detail-oriented and respectful of cleanliness.

Hazel Evers is a perfect representation of a Virgo in "American Horror Story: Hotel." She's loyal and practical, dedicating herself to doing her best to take care of the hotel and of James Patrick March, whom she's revealed in Episode 10 to have been in love with. Hazel takes a lot of pride in the work that she does, and seems genuinely excited when her work challenges her in unexpected ways, such as the bloody messes that many of the guests leave behind.

However, Hazel also carries a Virgo's overly critical nature, especially toward herself. In Episode 4, after John Lowe opens up to her about having lost his son, Hazel reveals that she blames herself for her son's murder at the hands of a serial killer, even though she only took her eyes off him for a brief moment.

Libra: Sally

The seventh sign of the zodiac is Libra. Libra rules over those born between September 23 and October 27. Libras value balance and partnership more than any other signs in the zodiac, and often have a strong sense of justice. More than anything, though, Libras hate to be alone, and are always looking to find the perfect life partner or make sure they keep the life partner that they have.

Sally, one of the Hotel Cortez's many ghosts, has an obsession with John Lowe that strongly resembles a Libra's need for companionship and a life partner. Having been in a secret affair with John since he began his killings as the Ten Commandments Killer, Sally believes she's the only one who truly understands John and can provide him with the love and companionship he needs, and feels that John's decision to reunite with his wife in Episode 10 will never work, since his wife will never understand him the way she does.

Libras are also known to be peacekeepers, and like to avoid conflict when necessary. While Sally is certainly willing to fight to be with John, she tends to be conflict avoidant in other areas of her life, often hanging in the background or going along with other people's schemes in spite of her resentment towards them, such as when she tried to help Iris die a peaceful death in Episode 3, despite considering Iris to be her mortal enemy.

Scorpio: James Patrick March

Scorpio, the sign ruling over those born between October 23 and November 24, is one of the most unique signs of the zodiac. Scorpios are known to be intense, intelligent, resourceful, and often obsessive, making them strong personalities to contend with. A Scorpio's complex traits often make them powerful leaders capable of great things — or, in the case of "American Horror Story: Hotel," terrible things.

In Episode 3, Tristan Duffy tells James Patrick March that he found out that March is a Scorpio while Googling him, and that it explains a lot. It really does. March displays much of a Scorpio's trademark intensity and obsessiveness, especially in his work as a killer and the lengths he went to design the secret areas of the Hotel Cortez. In Episode 4, it's revealed that many of the world's most famous serial killers, including Jeffrey Dahmer, Aileen Wuornos, and the Zodiac Killer, were protégés of March. His leadership skills helped mold them into the murderers they became.

Scorpios are also known to be very manipulative if they want to be, and March is the master manipulator of "American Horror Story: Hotel." Many of the series' stories were later revealed to be March's doing, with the Hotel Cortez's founder working behind the scenes. In Episode 8, it's revealed that March is behind John Lowe's transformation into the Ten Commandments Killer, and has been manipulating John into finishing his religiously motivated killings after his death.

Sagittarius: Dr. Alex Lowe

Sagittarius is the final fire sign of the zodiac, ruling between November 22 and December 21. Often considered the explorer's sign, Sagittarians are known to be free spirited and adventurous, traveling from place to place, or job to job. Sagittarians are also known to be truth seekers, always looking for answers to life's biggest questions.

Dr. Alex Lowe is the best representative of a Sagittarius in "American Horror Story: Hotel." Early in the series, Alex works as a doctor, solving medical mysteries. However, when she realizes there may be an opportunity to solve the mystery of her missing son Holden in Episode 4, Alex drops everything in her life to move into the Hotel Cortez, becoming a vampire and the Countess' governess.

Like Many Sagittarians, Alex is often blunt and forthright to point of insensitivity. In Episode 2, Alex makes a home visit to the Ellison house to find that Max Ellison has contracted measles and is in critical condition. She then berates his mother for not getting him vaccinated, even though Mrs. Ellison is already regretting the decision and Alex's words won't change anything. In the same episode she's also very blunt about her decision to divorce John, despite the difficult time he's going through.

Capricorn: Donovan

Capricorn is the sign of the goat, and people born between December 22 and January 21 will carry its traits. Capricorn is an earth sign, and like other earth signs, they tend to be pragmatic. In particular, Capricorns are masters of responsibility, discipline, and self-control. However, they can also be condescending know-it-alls and extreme pessimists.

Donovan may be the main Capricorn of "American Horror Story: Hotel." While at first this may sound strange, considering that much of Donovan's situation in "Hotel" is due to his drug habit and lack of self-control, Donovan's actions after getting clean and becoming a vampire reveal his Capricorn nature. In fact, of the Countess' many lovers, Donovan is the most disciplined, regularly cautioning against certain kills or reckless actions for fear of getting caught.

Donovan also displays Capricorn's more negative aspects. He's regularly condescending, such as when he berates Iris in Episode 3 for how bad of a mother she was to him growing up, or in Episode 10 when he taunts Valentino before killing him, saying he knows little of the world or the Countess. Donovan is also one of the Hotel Cortez's most pessimistic denizens, always expecting the worst out of people.

Aquarius: Tristan Duffy

Aquarius is the ruling sign from January 20 to February 18, as well as the final air sign of the zodiac. Like other air signs, Aquarius is independent and progressive, but it's also often seen as the ultimate outcast sign. Aquarians value personal freedom among all else, and they often feel disconnected from other people, despite liking to be around them. Many Aquarians even try to make themselves seem more like outcasts than they are, as they value uniqueness over fitting in.

Tristan Duffy is almost a textbook Aquarius in "American Horror Story: Hotel." He begins the series as a popular model working under Will Drake, but he quickly makes it known that despite the love and adoration he receives for his beauty and his work, he doesn't feel like he belongs. In Episode 2, Tristan tells Will that he's done modeling, despite being at the height of his career, and scars his own cheek to try to ruin his career.

Tristan constantly seeks his own freedom, never wanting to be tied down. Although he falls for the Countess early on, he's always uncomfortable with her pulling him into her own schemes and agendas. Tristan is very much his own person, and hates feeling controlled. However, after falling in love with Liz Taylor, whom he feels lifts him up rather than tying him down, he tells her in Episode 6 that he'd never felt love before and was surprised by how good it felt.

Pisces: Will Drake

Pisces is the final sign of the zodiac, with people born between February 19 and March 20 carrying its traits. Pisces is known for being one of the friendliest signs, with tendencies to love people, romance, art, and music.

Will Drake fits in quite well with other Pisces. After all, he's based much of his life around his love of art and fashion, and his passion for people has made him a popular personality in that world. When Drake disappears after his death in Episode 9, he's sorely missed, and it's later revealed in Episode 12 that many conspiracies have taken hold regarding his location.

Pisces are also known to be overly trusting at times, and Will definitely displays this trait. He continually falls for the schemes of the Countess, who wants to marry him for his money before killing him. Despite being told by James Patrick March in Episode 9 about the Countess' schemes, Will refuses to believe she could betray him until it's too late.
