Deadpool 2 Could Include Time Travel, Says Ryan Reynolds

Deadpool is returning to the big screen next summer, but could he be coming back from the future? According to Deadpool film franchise star Ryan Reynolds, it's a possibility.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Reynolds revealed all, or at least what he could. When asked about timetravel element being shown in Deadpool 2, Reynolds cooly responded, "It is possible. Your answers will all be... they'll be [here] soon. They'll be coming soon."

While we aren't given any specifics, it's widely believed that time travel will be used in context with Josh Brolin's Cable, a mutant who possesses telepathy and telekinetic powers. The time traveling aspect of Cable's backstory is a massive, integral component to the character, as it serves as a narrative tool to explain his futuristic tech-riddled body and his general life outlook and worldview of the present day, especially in regards to his relationship with Wade Wilson/Deadpool.

Implementing time travel in the sequel would be a smart move, as it could help flesh out Cable's origin story in a bit more detail and serve as a super entertaining plot device, sending Cable and Deadpool hopping between the past and the present.

However, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch previously stated creatives behind the sequel have approached Cable's origins from an incredibly discerning angle. "Look, I think besides all of... Deadpool, sort of the film universe Deadpool, you kind of have to be selective of how you approach these characters because there's a canon of work that's so massive that you could never put it all on screen," Leitch explained when asked how heavily Cable will be featured in the sequel. "We've been really particular what we're going to put in."

Whether we'll actually see time travel in Deadpool 2 is anyone's guess, but it'll likely incite some giggle-inducing one-liners from Reynolds' Wade Wilson. Imagine all the meta-humor and fourth-wall-breaking moments and references to the original Deadpool comics; it's almost too exciting to bear.

Production on Deadpool 2 was shut down in light of stuntwoman Joi "SJ" Harris' tragic and untimely death on set earlier this week. Sources state that filming will resume shortly. The film's June 1, 2018 release date still remains.

For now, fans can speculate on the possibility of time travel being shown in Deapdool 2 and then check out why the film will blow us all away next year.
