Oscar Isaac Confirms What We Suspected All Along About Poe And Finn's Relationship

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away existed two characters — Poe Dameron and Finn — whose fates would forever be linked as part of the "Star Wars" Skywalker saga. And while the two obviously made for great battle buddies, there was a completely different kind of relationship that fans and even cast members were hoping to see flourish at some point during the final trilogy.

"I think there could've been a very interesting, forward-thinking — not even forward-thinking, just, like, current-thinking — love story there, something that hadn't quite been explored yet," Poe actor Oscar Isaac told IGN in 2019. "Particularly the dynamic between these two men in war that could've fallen in love with each other."

According to Isaac, the main reason a romantic partnership between Poe and Finn wasn't explored was that Disney didn't feel comfortable with it. "The Disney overlords were not ready to do that," he told IGN. But that didn't stop the two screen stars from experimenting with their portrayal of the characters.

Neither John Boyega or Oscar Isaac shied away from their intimacy while filming

According to Oscar Isaac, both he and John Boyega played up the potential that their characters could have a romantic relationship. He told Variety in 2019, "There's like an intimacy that was very just, like, there. And I think the fact that neither of us shied away from that while we were shooting as well, I think it was just like, these are two guys that are happy being intimate with each other emotionally. So it wasn't actually a total shock [that] people, you know, saw that in there."

Isaac recalled to Variety how the actors tried their best to convince the higher-ups to allow them to become more intimate on-screen, but the Mickey Mouse company just wasn't having it. "Personally, I kind of hoped and wished that maybe that would have been taken further in the other films," Isaac confirmed. "But I [didn't] have control over that." One of the first times the "X-Men: Apocalypse" star revealed his hopes for a Finn and Poe love story was in 2015 during an appearance on "Ellen."

"I think it's very subtle romance that's happening," Isaac said. "You have to just look very closely — you have to watch it a few times to see the little hints, but there was. At least I was playing romance."
