The Oscar Isaac Spider-Man Role Even True Fans Forget About

Oscar Isaac is currently one of the most in-demand actors in the business, having appeared in everything from the rebooted Disney "Star Wars" trilogy to Denis Villeneuve's "Dune." He's even spent time chewing scenery in smaller-scale projects such as writer-director Alex Garland's heady sci-fi horror flicks, "Annihilation" and the earlier "Ex Machina."

Perhaps because he is such a physical actor, often dominating the scenes he appears in through the sheer force of his jawline, it is easy to forget that Isaac has taken on quite a bit of voice work over the years, as well. In fact, he appeared as Spider-Man in a role that even the most diehard web-slinger fans have probably forgotten about for the time being.

There are as many Spider-Men (Spiders-Man?) as there are universes in the multiverse, so it's no surprise that Oscar Isaac's Easter egg of a role in the Oscar-winning 2018 animated feature, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," came and went without much fanfare. With a sequel on the horizon, though, his character may become more significant.

Oscar Isaac is Spider-Man 2099

In a post-credits stinger scene from "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," audiences were given a hilarious glimpse at Spider-Man 2099. This version of the masked menace, as his name implies, hails from an end-of-the-century version of Earth, where his real name is Miguel O'Hara. The character's self-titled comic book series was a smash hit with fans during its run from 1992-1996, as it was a refreshing premise that gave the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler new characters and material to draw from.

In "Spider-Verse," we see O'Hara, who has been sucked across the multiverse with other Spidey variants, return to his home setting of Nueva York, where he is given a wristwatch-like doodad that allows him to traverse the multiverse. His first stop? Earth in 1967. From there, the scene devolves into an extended riff on the "Spider-Man pointing" meme.

Despite the comedic tone of the scene, Oscar Isaac's Spider-Man 2099 will likely see his role greatly expanded in the highly anticipated (and somewhat awkwardly entitled) sequel, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)." O'Hara's ability to make autonomous jumps across the multiverse will likely play a huge factor in streamlining the narrative in a movie franchise that relies so heavily on its metaphysical conceit

The film is expected to debut in October, 2022.
