Currently, the release date for "The Boys: Diabolical" is firmer than the release for "The Boys" Season 3. This is due to the surprise release of the animated spin-off show announcement at CCXP Worlds 2021. Given that filming on Season 3 has wrapped, it's likely the next chapter of "The Boys" will premiere in 2022, as many outlets have hypothesized. The same can be said for "The Boys: Diabolical." Urban's video revealed that the show will premiere in 2022 (per Deadline).
Since there is no official release of the new season of "The Boys" confirmed, it stands to reason that the animated series may premiere ahead of its live-action counterpart. This will be the first new content the Amazon franchise has released since Season 2 ended in October 2020. This will not be the only content in the works, either. Per a September Deadline report, an additional spinoff is in development with Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas as showrunners. The new show is a YA story, and it involves characters who attend an exclusive college for superheroes.
Who is in the cast of The Boys: Diabolical?
With the new series "The Boys: Diabolical" going the animated route, there is a lot of room for more stories to be told, which means there's room for a sprawling cast to join the fun. Big names have already been attached to Amazon's "The Boys," such as Jensen Ackles, who will play Soldier Boy, in Season 3. The actor is reuniting with "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke for the new season.
This new spinoff show appears to be attracting big names, too. Though no voice actors have been confirmed, a number of creators are already involved. Per the CCXP Worlds 2021 video announcement, some of those names include Awkwafina, Garth Ennis, Justin Roiland, Seth Rogen, Andy Samberg, and Aisha Tyler. Many of those names should be familiar, like Rogen, who is, of course, one of the executive producers on "The Boys." Another interesting addition is Ennis, who is the writer responsible for the original comic series "The Boys" is based on. He has been heavily involved with the script process for the original show, wanting to make sure that they get Butcher right (via Comicbook.com).
What is the plot of The Boys: Diabolical?
Plot details have not been made available, but this may have to do with the structure of the series. As Karl Urban revealed in the CCXP Worlds 2021 announcement, "The Boys: Diabolical" is an anthology series. Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen have compared it to the "The Animatrix" anthology film that came out during the height of the original "The Matrix" franchise. "Ever since we saw the animated film 'The Animatrix,' a series of short animated films set in the universe of 'The Matrix,' we've wanted to rip it off. Today that dream has come true," the writing partners said in a joint statement (via Variety).
Each episode will be written by a different creative, and, similar to the "The Animatrix," we can expect each chapter to focus on a different. Eric Kripke has promised "funny, shocking, gory" stories as the fans are accustomed to seeing. The only footage yet released was the teaser depicting an animation of Billy Butcher's (Karl Urban) bulldog Terror and a trail of impressive actors and writers that will be involved.
