The Biggest Question AHS Fans Have After Coven

"American Horror Story: Coven," the show's third season, is beloved by many fans as well as "AHS" co-creator Ryan Murphy. In a 2013 article in The Hollywood Reporter, Murphy singled the season as his favorite of his first three standalone series, edging out "Murder House" and "Asylum," Murphy described "Coven" as "an allegory for any minority group living in our country."

The cast of "Coven" includes Sarah Paulson, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Taissa Farmiga, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, and Evan Peters. Set in New Orleans at Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, the series follows a coven of witches as they battle both outside threats and each other to become the new Supreme. Many of the actresses reprised their roles for Season 8, "Apocalypse," saving the world from the Antichrist, Michael Langdon (Cody Fern).

However, among the many familiar faces who return for Season 8, one central character is conspicuously absent. Fans took to the "American Horror Story" subreddit, questioning what happened to Kyle Spencer, the sweet frat boy who Madison Montgomery (Roberts) kills and subsequently brings back to life with some help from Zoe Benson (Farmiga) and Misty Day (Lily Rabe).

What happened to Coven's Kyle Spencer?

Evan Peters' Kyle, one of the few male main characters on AHS' "Coven," returns from the dead a bit worse for the wear. Madison and Zoe stitch Kyle back together with an assortment of boy parts. Ryan Murphy's spin on Frankenstein's monster is in love with Zoe, and at the end of Season 3, they are very much a couple. So where is Kyle in "Apocalypse"? This is something that Reddit fans have been wondering about for some time. "so i'm rewatching ahs, and i'm on the last episode of coven, and i was wondering what happened to kyle??? he wasn't in apocalypse, someone please help!" asked u/mckenziea0120. "I just assume he was around and just wasn't shown because Evan was already playing 4 different characters that season," responded u/FunnyRevolutionary17.

After Zoe is killed while performing one of the tests of the Seven Wonders, Madison refuses to use her power of Vitalum Vitalis to resurrect her fellow witch. In a fit of rage, Kyle strangles Madison. Some fans think this act could have been his undoing. Redditor u/sethtylerrr thinks Kyle could have been burned at the stake; the punishment for killing a witch. "Isn't that only if you yourself are a witch?" questioned u/SnootSnooter. "They technically count him as their own because he protected them, but then he killed Madison, so it was a betrayal," u/sethtylerrr responded.

Did Kyle face repercussions for killing Madison Montgomery?

Other fans prefer to think Kyle gets a happier ending."I'm sure he was just around the Academy, probably more busy attending to everyone's needs since there are more girls in the house. I really wanna believe he's alive because him and Zoe are the one of the more stable relationships in the show (as stable as you can get on AHS)," stated u/Ponky616. "same. zoe and kyle are my otp actually! hopefully, he was just hiding out upstairs while they were practicing," agreed u/Mckenziea0120.

One fan feels Kyle's abrupt exit from the show's canon does a disservice to some viewers. Kyle ranks as one of the worst in a season full of characters with tragic backstories, having been sexually molested by his mother for presumably much of his life. "I was really disappointed there wasn't good follow up or processing of the incest trauma I think that could've been really powerful because so many people have suffered from that in their lives," wrote u/tiredofbeingyelledat.

Although Kyle's whereabouts aren't confirmed, there's always a chance he'll pop up in future seasons since Murphy often leaves the door open for fan favorites to return. Truthfully, Kyle wouldn't have brought much more to Season 8 other than brute strength, and he would certainly have been no match for Michael Langdon. Plus, he was Zoe's first love, so maybe she just moved on. Let's face it, a dimwitted lapdog doesn't have long-term potential.
