Freeridge - What We Know So Far

Netflix has countless original series that are set in high schools, ranging from hard-hitting dramas like "13 Reasons Why," sex comedies like "Sex Education," and heartwarmingly hilarious shows like "Never Have I Ever." Not all of their teen shows have worked out, such as the '90s-set "Everything Sucks," which only lasted one season, but we've seen plenty that have gone on to become major hits. One of the most popular teen shows on Netflix is easily "On My Block," which just released its fourth and final Season on October 4. The series stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, and Diego Tinico, and follows the lives of four teens attending high school in an inner-city neighborhood in Los Angeles.

Just days before the series took its final bow on Netflix, a spin-off titled "Freeridge" was announced that will follow four new characters. If you're as excited as we are for this new series, we've got you covered. Here's everything we know so far about "Freeridge."

When does Freeridge come out?

As of right now, there is no set release date for "Freeridge," which isn't too surprising as the show was just announced and hasn't begun filming yet. That being said, Season 4 of "On My Block" was announced this past January and had a quick turnaround (via TeenVogue), so there's certainly a possibility we could see this new spin-off sometime in mid-to-late 2022 — most likely in September or October. If the show were to start filming in the coming weeks, a summer 2022 release date could also be possible, but that's really pushing it.

The first three seasons of "On My Block" all premiered in March, unlike Season 4, which made its debut in October. While highly unlikely, there's still a slight chance that the show could end up following the path of the initial three seasons and also have a March release date (via IMDb).

Who is in Freeridge?

"Freeridge" will star Bryana Salaz (via Variety), best known for competing on Season 7 of the popular NBC series "The Voice," as well as starring in the Netflix series "Team Kaylie."

Also joining the main cast will be Keyla Monterroso Mejia, who you may recognize from her role in the Disney+ vampire-themed short "Growing Fangs." She'll also be appearing in the forthcoming 11th Season of the beloved HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Ciara Riley Wilson, who plays Athena in the live-action Disney Channel Original Movie "Kim Possible," and has a supporting role on the "Bad Boys" spin-off TV series "L.A.'s Finest" opposite Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, is also on board. Rounding out the main cast is Shiv Pai, who appears in Season 2 of the Marvel/Netflix series "Iron Fist" as a young Davos and also makes a brief appearance opposite Adam Sandler in the critically acclaimed Safdie Brothers picture "Uncut Gems."

Salaz, Mejia, Wilson, and Pai all made an appearance in the series finale of "On My Block" to tease what's to come next in the neighborhood of "Freeridge" (via IMDb).

What is the plot of Freeridge?

"Freeridge" will follow the four characters (played by Salaz, Mejia, Wilson and Pai) who made their debut in the "On My Block" series finale and will reveal a different side of the urban LA neighborhood. The new characters will end up going on a crazy adventure after learning that they may or may not have summoned a deadly curse. This sounds like an interesting premise for a spin-off to "On My Block," especially as the original series was particularly grounded in realism dealing with topics such as gang violence, death, and heartbreak. There's no doubt that this new series will still focus on those tough topics, but the fact that the premise hints at something supernatural definitely raises some eyebrows.

Creator of "On My Block" Lauren Iungerich will be handing the reigns to her creative partners Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft, who will be serving as showrunners. While announcing the spin-off, Iungerich said, "There are more stories to tell of our beloved Freeridge and I cannot wait to continue to work with this talented team" (via Variety).
