26% Of Fans Agree This Is Their Favorite New Amsterdam Character

"New Amsterdam" is a medical drama on NBC that is loosely based on a true story. The hospital at the center of the show is inspired by one of the oldest hospitals in the United States: New York City's Bellevue Hospital. In the show, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) gets hired to bring the hospital back to life and tear down the bureaucracy which has allegedly ruined the institution in recent years. He also struggles with the medical staff under his direction who aren't entirely on board with all of the radical change he's making. Admirably, it's one of the few shows on TV whose timeline currently exists in the real world with several Season 3 storylines revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic.

Any show that has as strong of a following as "New Amsterdam" is going to get the audience talking about things like their favorite season, their favorite episode, and their favorite character. Recently, the subreddit for New Amsterdam ran a poll asking who everyone's favorite character was. One star won a whopping 26 percent of the vote of the available six choices: Max Goodwin, Helen Sharpe, Lauren Bloom, Floyd Reynolds, Iggy Frome, and Vijay Kapoor.

Helen Sharpe is the fan-favorite character on New Amsterdam

Even if you're not familiar with the show, it's easy to see how Dr. Sharpe could win this prestigious yet informal award. The actor who plays her, Freema Agyeman, is not only well-established in other popular shows, but brings a powerful and effective performance to each role she plays. Many of you probably recognize her from her role on "Doctor Who" as Martha Jones, companion to David Tennant's manifestation of The Doctor. She also played a very important part in the woefully underrated series "Sense8" as Amanita Caplan.

Now that she's established herself as a prominent cast member on "New Amsterdam," it'll be exciting to see what else she brings to this role going forward — especially now that she and her character's love interest have finally overcome some of their issues and decided to pursue their romantic feelings for one another. The show is currently halfway through its fourth season and airs new episodes every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET. You can also stream older episodes on NBC's streaming service Peacock.
