Logan Blu-Ray Will Likely Include Black And White Version

Logan feels a lot like a classic Western with Wolverine as an aging gunslinger-type in an arid desert landscape, and it will soon look even more like one.

Director James Mangold confirmed to Deadline that a black and white version of the film will "likely" be included on the Blu-ray release. "It is something we are doing," he said.

Mangold said he thinks Hugh Jackman looks best with harsh lighting that transitions beautifully into black and white. And the director was encouraged due to positive response to his stark, black and white promotional images that he shared in the months leading up to the film's release.

"I think it even surprised everyone to the degree that there is a kind of a running assumption that black and white is a turnoff for most people," Mangold said. "It caused such an extreme reaction, and so much appreciation for these pictures, and then people immediately wondering if the film itself was going to be in black and white, and so we are giving it a whirl, and I think the Blu-ray will come out with a pass on it. I think it will be a very handsome black and white version of the picture."

Mad Max director George Miller took a similar approach when he released a "black and chrome" version of Mad Max: Fury Road.

Mangold also said the Western tone of Logan was very intentional. The 1953 film Shane is heavily referenced in the movie, and is even seen playing on a TV in one scene. "That film is a magnificent example of Hollywood filmmaking at its zenith, and technically it's so beautiful," he said. "The acting is masterful, the writing profound. Each of the characters are drawn in a beautiful shade of gray."
