Red One Release Date, Cast, And Plot - What We Know So Far

If there is one irrefutable truth about Dwayne Johnson, it's the fact that the Hollywood superstar loves to keep his schedule packed. A quick scan of his IMDb page reveals the multi-hyphenate star has eight projects on the horizon, including the completed "Jungle Cruise," the still-filming "Black Adam," and upcoming projects "San Andreas 2" and "The King." This week, we can add one more major project to Johnson's pile: the holiday-themed action-adventure comedy "Red One."

The Hollywood Reporter revealed in late June that Johnson and his production company, Seven Bucks, have set up "Red One" at Amazon. There seems to be a lot of promise and hype built up around the project, with THR noting possible branding and marketing tie-ins associated with the project. What that really means, though, is anyone's guess, but good use could be made of Amazon's marketplace with its tie-in opportunities. So far, we know that Johnson will take on multiple roles for the project, including producing alongside Seven Bucks partners Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Chris Morgan, the screenwriter behind "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," will pen "Red One." No director nor any additional casting announcement have been revealed yet.

With this project still in the early stages of production, here's what we really know so far about "Red One."

What is the Red One release date?

According to THR, "Red One" is planning "to shoot in 2022 with a 2023 holiday release." No details have been released yet regarding expected filming locations or the duration of the shoot. However, depending on the needs of the "Red One" plot, the schedules for Johnson and any other cast and crew who board the pic, and the expectations of Amazon (to name a few key factors), we could generally expect filming for "Red One" to occur in mid-to-late 2022. This would allow post-production for the film to take up much of early 2023 and allow Amazon to roll out any big marketing and e-commerce plans it has throughout the year.

Additionally, THR's mention of "holiday release" teases the likelihood that "Red One" will premiere on Amazon Prime Video sometime between Thanksgiving 2023 and Christmas Day 2023, or it could premiere on either of those specific holidays when the chances of families streaming from the comfort of their own couch are greater than any other day. Amazon's goal to lock in a major holiday release date slot could become clearer if any plans to release "Red One" theatrically materialize.

Who is in the Red One cast?

So far, Johnson is the only big name attached to "Red One." Per THR, Johnson will star in the holiday feature film, naturally. No official details about Johnson's character have been released. If this movie is a Christmas-themed movie and, by that guess, includes Santa Claus — which we're willing to say yes to with a title like "Red One" — then it's quite possible our favorite action star will be transforming into the world's most famous gift-giver.

One look at Johnson's IMDb page shows he is no stranger to tackling larger-than-life characters. Whether it's transforming into fellow mythical being the Tooth Fairy for 2010's "Tooth Fairy," a video game hero in "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," tougher-than-nails DSS agent Luke Hobbs in the "Fast & Furious" franchise, or superpowers DC anti-hero Black Adam for the upcoming DCEU pic "Black Adam," Johnson has worn many, many hats.

The real question won't be whether Johnson can pull off a legit transformation into Old Saint Nick (because we know he can, even if it requires a hefty suspension of disbelief), but who will co-star alongside him in "Red One." No names have yet been thrown into the ring for this project, which means all casting suggestions are valid. We do have one suggestion that could work: Kevin Hart. Following their team-ups on both "Jumanji" movies, the 2016 action-comedy "Central Intelligence," and Hart's "Hobbs & Shaw" cameo, seeing the pair back on screen together for a holiday-themed adventure could be a major draw. Plus, imagine all of the elf-related jokes Johnson could fire off at Hart's expense.

What is the plot of Red One?

While no specific plot details for "Red One" have been shared yet, we do have a very general logline for the movie. And when we say general, we mean general. Per THR, "Red One" is "a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre." That's it. That's the entire synopsis thus far.

Even with this thin premise, which completely eschews any mention of Christmas, Santa Claus, the North Pole, or reindeer with red noses, there is the reveal that it will be part of the holiday movie genre. As such, audiences can likely expect to see a high-concept holiday-themed movie take shape in the coming months as this project develops. Additionally, the use of "four-quadrant action-adventure comedy" immediately calls to mind some of Johnson's biggest movies to date, including the "Jumanji" films, "Jungle Cruise," "Hobbs & Shaw," and "Central Intelligence." Johnson is a seasoned star when it comes to action, adventure, and comedy, and knows how to navigate complex plots (including those in the aforementioned flicks). This should set fans at ease if there are any worries the plot of "Red One" won't be something worthy of Johnson's skills as a performer or, at minimum, something eminently watchable.
