Will There Be A Cruel Summer Season 2?
On April 20, 2021, Freeform premiered its most recent teen drama thriller, "Cruel Summer," which was created by Bert V. Royal. Set in three timelines — 1993, 1994, and 1995 — "Cruel Summer" centers on two teens, Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) and Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia) in the fictional town of Skylin, Texas. Jeanette, nerdy and awkward, is delighted when she befriends the more popular girl Kate. Not long after the friendship begins, Kate goes missing and believed by many to be dead. In Kate's absence, Jeanette transforms herself and takes over the place of the most popular girl in town.
However, when Kate is miraculously found alive, she accuses Jeanette of seeing her abduction happen but not reporting it for her own personal gain, soon making Jeanette infamous for these alleged actions. The thriller is captivating audiences as it continues to play out, with the tenth and final episode of the season set to air on June 15th. With the season finale nearing, fans are likely wondering if the events of the story will be wrapped up nicely or left open for another potential season.
Here's what we know so far about whether or not "Cruel Summer" is coming back for Season 2.
The fate of Cruel Summer has not been confirmed
As of this writing, Freeform has not confirmed a second season of "Cruel Summer," nor have they announced its ending. The lack of an answer is not necessarily a bad thing, however, as it's common for shows — especially in their first season — to not receive a renewal or cancellation until after the season has ended.
Meanwhile, one of the stars of "Cruel Summer," Chiara Aurelia, has weighed in on the matter. During an interview with Cinema Blend, when asked if the story could extend into a second season, Aurelia responded, "It definitely has the possibility to. I think it just depends on what our audience wants, what they want to see from us. So, I'm really excited to see where this story could go and how it could unfold."
The show's fans would definitely agree with Aurelia that they're eager to see where the story would go with a second season. Stay tuned for more updates on "Cruel Summer" and how much longer and more cruel the season could get.
