What You Didn't Know About Lady Gaga's Costumes On AHS: Hotel

Lady Gaga wowed the world in 2008 with her first hit single, "Just Dance." Since then, Gaga's star power has only grown, releasing six studio albums, winning 12 Grammys, and becoming a certified fashion icon. In recent years, though, the performer has turned to acting, notably showcasing her talent for the craft in 2018's critically acclaimed "A Star is Born." Before earning an Oscar nomination for the film though, Gaga hit the small screen in popular anthology series "American Horror Story," debuting in Season 5's "AHS: Hotel." She starred as The Countess, the beautiful fashionista owner of Hotel Cortez with a shocking thirst for blood.

With a glamorous star like Lady Gaga playing such a glamorous character, the costumes had to be on point. Luckily, as "AHS" fans know, The Countess was outfitted with some pretty awe-inspiring frocks. But how exactly did the character's costumes come together? Turns out, it was a collaborative effort.

Many people were involved in establishing The Countess' incredible looks

In a video shared by FX on their official YouTube, fans get a behind-the-scenes look at the fashion of "AHS: Hotel." Costume Designer Lou Eyrich shows viewers what she calls "The Gaga Room."  Lady Gaga herself shares that she and Lou worked "really closely together" on The Countess' fashion, with designers who previously worked with Gaga sending in pieces in the hopes of them making the production. However, the final costume choices came down to "AHS" creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy, who looked through "hundreds and hundreds" of outfits pitched to him by both Eyrich and Gaga's teams and then handpicked a staggering "50 to a hundred gowns from each batch," as Gaga tells FX. Lady Gaga also loaned the show some gorgeous Versace pieces from her personal collection.

On her character's sartorial choices, Gaga shares, "The Countess is an extremely complicated character. Lou and I spent time looking at the clothes, reading the script, and talking about how I feel about the character. Because fashion is such an important part of my life, it's hard for me to put clothes on for no reason."

The team's meticulous efforts certainly paid off, with The Countess' looks being one of the highlights of the show. While Lady Gaga isn't slated to appear in any upcoming "American Horror Story" seasons, we imagine any return of the actress would be full of equally incredible fashions.
