The Movie That Fans Of Outside The Wire Should Watch Next

Netflix is starting strong in 2021, releasing another hit film with Outside the WireAn action flick that certainly doesn't hold back, the film stars Anthony Mackie — whom many will recognize as Sam Wilson from the Marvel Cinematic Universe — playing a character named Leo, a prototype android soldier who works for the U.S. army. His co-star, The Twilight Zone and Black Mirror actor Damson Idris, plays a drone pilot named Harp, sent to serve under Leo in Ukraine.

Outside the Wire is set in 2036, as Harp gets his first experience on the frontlines of a futuristic war. The movie focuses on the negative effects of advanced technology being used in warfare — touching on drone strikes, nuclear weapons, the use of robot and android soldiers, and more. As the film is set not that far into the future, it's easy to imagine this horrific situation developing in our reality.

With huge action sequences and fantastic performances from Mackie, Idris, and the surrounding cast, Outside the Wire is a total hit. Currently, it sits at number one on Netflix's list of the top ten most-watched movies in the U.S. But what if you've already finished watching the action flick and want more of the same stuff? As it turns out, if you're looking for the perfect movie to watch after Outside the Wire, you don't even have to leave Netflix to find it.

Outside the Wire fans need to check out The Old Guard

Released in July 2020 — and produced by the same company as Outside the Wire and another Netflix hit action film, Extraction – The Old Guard is one of the best movies for hardcore action fans. Like the new Mackie-led film, director Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Old Guard has brutal action sequences and uses sci-fi and supernatural elements as metaphors for more realistic struggles. The movie, based on a graphic novel series of the same name, was extremely successful for Netflix — and while many people have called for a sequel to The Old Guard, Netflix hasn't announced anything yet. (With how well the movie did, it seems likely to happen.)

Starring Charlize Theron as Andromache of Scythia, known to her friends as Andy, The Old Guard focuses on a group of immortal warriors who fight for the survival and improvement of humanity. Much like Outside the Wire's Leo and his pragmatic understanding of the world's faults and failures, Andy has pretty much given up hope for the human race and is content to live with her found family as the world destroys itself. Then comes Nile (KiKi Layne), a new immortal. Andy and the others must find and train her before people start to notice her unbelievable ability to heal and try to take it for themselves.

Both Outside the Wire and The Old Guard center on super-powered warriors with strong personal morals who mentor younger, more optimistic — and naive — soldiers. The Old Guard has more humor than Outside the Wire, focusing on the interpersonal relationship between the group of warriors, including Andy, Nile, Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts). But just like Mackie's film, the actors' performances in The Old Guard are outstanding. Add in some amazing action, and what's not to love?
