Legally Blonde 3 - What We Know So Far

They're making a third Legally Blonde movie. What, like it's hard?

Back in 2001, Reese Witherspoon charmed the pants off audiences as Elle Woods, a sorority girl who gets admitted to Harvard in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend. While she gets into plenty of conflicts with her peers along the way, she manages to win an important case and prove that stereotypes about blondes aren't always true. All these years later, the film still stands as a great work of female empowerment.

Legally Blonde went on to inspire two sequels (one direct follow-up and one that went directly to video). There's also a Broadway musical based on the movie, and even after all that, it seems like fans still can't get enough of Elle. While a third film has been in the works since 2018, things finally seem to be progressing, and we have some more details about when we can expect Elle to return.

The original cast recently got back together for a reunion, featuring Witherspoon as well as Selma Blair, Luke Wilson, Jennifer Coolidge, and more (via PopSugar). All the Legally Blonde fans out there will have to wait a little bit longer, but to see Reese Witherspoon reprise one of her most iconic roles, it's bound to be worth it.

When will Legally Blonde 3 be released?

The screenplay for Legally Blonde 3 has been written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor. The script's been floating around for a while, but it seems like things may get started on filming very soon. A recent report from Variety confirms that Legally Blonde 3 has a release date of May 20th, 2022.

When the announcement first came out for a third film (for the sake of clarity, we aren't including the direct-to-video Legally Blondes as a true "sequel"), it was originally projected to be released in theaters in February of 2020. Naturally, that date has come and gone with no real news, but it seems like fans will only have to wait a little while longer until they can see what Elle Woods is up to these days. Plus, with a 2022 release date, that gives audiences plenty of time to pick outfits and work on their bends and snaps.

Who will be in the Legally Blonde 3 cast?

As of this writing, Reese Witherspoon is the only original cast member confirmed to return. She'll reprise her famous role of Elle Woods, whom she played in Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blue. While other cast confirmations are expected in the near future, it seems as though plenty of people from the original really want to come back.

In an interview with an Entertainment Tonight, Luke Wilson, who played Emmett Richmond in the first two films, stated he'd be down to come back to reprise his role as Elle Woods' husband. He claimed, "I'd love to do another one. I mean, just that character Reese played was so funny at the time and that has kind of become this iconic character now."

He's not alone in his desire to return to the franchise. Jennifer Coolidge, whom fans know as Paulette Bonafonté from the original movies, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about wanting to return, saying, "If I'm asked to do it I'll definitely be in there." She goes on to say, "I would love to play Paulette again." It sounds like the first Legally Blonde was a great experience for all involved, so expect more than a few familiar faces to be confirmed as time goes on.

What will be the Legally Blonde 3 plot?

Reese Witherspoon has remained tight-lipped about what a third Legally Blonde movie would look like. While there currently aren't any plot details, Witherspoon hinted at what we could expect during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked to fill in the blanks of the statement, "Legally Blonde 3 will be ... ," she finished with, "So much fun. So full of fashion. So full of awesome feminist ideas. It will be global. It will have animals. It will have returning cast members. We just need to film it first. But that's my hope and dream for Legally Blonde 3."

It sounds like Witherspoon, who's also attached to the project as a producer, has some ambitious goals for the third film. She's incredibly busy these days, starring on television series like The Morning Show and Little Fires Everywhere, so the idea for what Legally Blonde 3 could be must be pretty good to bring her back. There's a lot of very funny people working on this movie, and we can't wait to see the law and fashion come together so beautifully once again.
