What We Do In The Shadows Season 3 - What We Know So Far

In the aftermath of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement's hit 2014 comedy movie "What We Do in the Shadows," it seemed like the story of a group of nerdy, ancient vampires was put to rest — that is, until the powers that be at FX decided to revive the film as a television series

With a new cast playing a group of vampires who share a house on New York's scenic Staten Island, the TV adaptation of "What We Do in the Shadows" maintains all the dry irreverence of its predecessor, and over the course of just two seasons, it's become one of the most critically-beloved comedies on television thanks to its clever writing, excellent central performances, and whip-smart sense of humor.

Filmed in a mockumentary style like "The Office," "What We Do in the Shadows" focuses on four vampires — Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), Laszlo's wife Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and "energy vampire" Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) — and Nandor's enthusiastic familiar Guillermo de la Cruz (Harvey Guillén), all of whom share a house. Thankfully, the show has already been renewed for a third season after Season 2 wrapped up in June 2020. Here's everything we know about the third season of "What We Do in the Shadows" so far. Spoilers for the first two seasons to follow!

What's the release date for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3?

After FX officially ordered a third season of "What We Do in the Shadows" in May 2020 (via the Hollywood Reporter), fans have been wondering when that third season might premiere. During 2020's revised version of San Diego Comic-Con, ComicCon@Home, the cast and crew of "What We Do in the Shadows" came together to discuss their upcoming third season. At the time, they didn't give a specific release date like many thought they would, instead preferring to remain quiet about pretty much all salient details regarding the third season. Fast-forward to June 2021, and the mystery of the third season's debut date has been solved.

FX announced on Thursday, June 3 that "What We Do in the Shadows" Season 3 will premiere on September 2, 2021. The FX Networks Twitter account confirmed, "Dust off your velvet capes and grab the glitter. An all-new season of @theshadowsfx premieres september 2." Those who can't watch immediately on September 2 and/or those who don't have cable can catch the Season 3 premiere on Hulu with the FX add-on the following day, September 3.

Who's in the cast of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3?

Judging from the ComicCon@Home panel, it's pretty clear that the core cast, including Novak, Berry, Demetriou, Proksch, and Guillén, will return. Beyond that, there aren't any specific details just yet, but if previous seasons of "What We Do in the Shadows" are any indication, there may be plenty of surprises in store where casting is concerned.

During season 1, when the four main vampires were required to appear in front of the Vampire Council, the Council itself was packed with huge guest stars, including Tilda Swinton, Evan Rachel Wood, Danny Trejo, Wesley Snipes (over video chat), Paul Reubens, and Clement and Waititi, setting a pretty high standard for guest stars. "Booksmart" breakout Beanie Feldstein and "The Sixth Sense" actor Haley Joel Osment — who hosted the ComicCon@Home panel — appeared in the first and second season as supporting players, respectively, and comedians like Nick Kroll, Vanessa Bayer, and Craig Robinson have popped up as well. Most memorably, Mark Hamill appeared in the season 2 episode "On the Run," which saw Lazlo adopt his memorable persona "Jackie Daytona" to hide from Hamill's ancient Jim the Vampire. No guest stars have been announced yet, but judging by the first two seasons, there could be some pretty exciting stars lined up for Season 3.

What's the plot of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3?

After a second season finale that sees the house of vampires discover that Guillermo has recently become an expert vampire hunter, that issue will almost certainly be addressed. Other than that, most plot details are still up in the air, save for a few details revealed during the ComicCon@Home panel.

Despite initially saying, "We know what's going to happen, but we're not gonna tell you," executive producers Paul Simms and Stefani Robinson did reveal some tidbits. As Simms said during the panel, "If there's any preview we can give about season 3, it's that [the roommates] all have something that they're searching for." This will obviously be different for each vampire; while Simms said Nandor may be "searching for love," Colin Robinson "still doesn't know how he became an energy vampire — he's just rolled with it all these years– so there might be a search that he goes on."

There might also be some animals joining the house in season 3. Besides Robinson mentioning "some creatures that live on edifices," which likely refers to gargoyles, Simms revealed, "The vampires do get a hellhound to protect them. That's all that I'm saying!"

The first two seasons of "What We Do in the Shadows" are currently streaming on Hulu now.
