Why Loki Visits Steve Rogers And Peggy Carter In Avengers: Endgame Encore
The ending of "Avengers: Endgame Encore" introduced some interesting post-credits scenes that set the stage for "Avengers: Doomsday." One of them expands the original movie's touching dance moment between Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) by having the Avengers' old foe Loki (Tom Hiddleston) knock on their door to offer help. But why would Loki visit them, especially way back in the 1940s? Watch Looper's video above to find out.
The thing to remember here is that this isn't just any Loki visiting Steve and Peggy. This is very specifically the Loki from the Disney+ show "Loki" — or, at least, a different iteration who walks a similar path. The show's variant is affiliated with the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and becomes the timeline-governing God of Stories by the end of "Loki" Season 2.
The Loki in "Avengers: Endgame Encore" is seen wearing his TVA garb instead of his God of Stories regalia. Still, his association with the agency and familiarity with time travel explains how he can visit Steve and Peggy in the past while knowing full well who they are — and his related knowledge of timelines might explain precisely why he's there.
Loki and the Time Variance Authority are all about fixing timelines
The ending of "Avengers: Endgame" sees Steve embark on a solo mission to return all the Infinity Stones to their proper timelines in order to avoid any further mess. However, the one thing he does change is opting to stay in the past to have a promised dance and a shot at a happy life with his beloved Peggy. The fact that a TVA Loki variant pretty much immediately interrupts this happy moment is a clear indication that something within the multiverse has gone drastically wrong.
The TVA scene in "Avengers: Endgame Encore" explained that the multiverse is collapsing, and Loki visiting Steve and Peggy seems to suggest that Captain America himself might be connected to the situation somehow — but how?
