Tom Cruise's Digger Leaves All The Critics Divided
With Tom Cruise's star power at his disposal, four-time Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu's new movie "Digger" should be a slam dunk, right? Not so fast — according to critics, the upcoming satirical black comedy might not be such a clear-cut case after all. Watch Looper's video above to find out why critics are divided about "Digger."
As the first trailer for "Digger" showed, the movie features Cruise as oil magnate Digger Rockwell, the most powerful man in the world. Unfortunately, one of his operations causes a huge, potentially global disaster. Suddenly locked in a race against time, the ever-boisterous Digger now has to save us all, while preferably emerging on the other side smelling like roses.
It's a big, bold premise, with Cruise being barely recognizable. However, it appears that not every critic is buying what Iñárritu and Cruise are selling, and that reflects in initial opinions of the movie.
Early opinions about Digger are in, and they are all over the place
We'll still have to wait before the official "Digger" reviews are in, but critics who were able to attend the film's world premiere in London on Tuesday, September 22 have already posted their opinions on social media. The first reactions note that "Digger" is very different from what people might expect. While many seem to enjoy it, viewers interestingly seem to "dig" very different aspects of the movie, suggesting that "Digger" might be difficult to categorize.
"Birdman" director Alejandro G. Iñárritu doesn't exactly shy away from making challenging movies. However, the best Tom Cruise movies are traditionally not all that hard to fit in the confines of a given genre, so it will be interesting to see what the actor's fans think of the evidently complex "Digger."
