What Stephen King Really Thinks About The Carrie Prime Video Series
Mike Flanagan's upcoming Stephen King adaptation "Carrie" updates a classic story of a bullied telekinetic girl who lashes out for our modern times. We've already seen a look at Flanagan's take on "Carrie" with the San Diego Comic-Con trailer for the Prime Video show, and now, we've also heard a few things straight from the man who wrote the original 1974 novel.
Stephen King has said his piece about the miniseries, and fortunately for Flanagan, the horror maestro has nothing but positive things to offer about the new "Carrie." King shared some of his thoughts on Threads. "Mike Flanagan's version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true," King wrote.
Of course, Flanagan has already worked on multiple successful Stephen King adaptations, from "Doctor Sleep" to "The Life of Chuck," so there's an established working relationship here. Thus, King probably wouldn't be inclined to badmouth a Flanagan project. Even so, hearing the author state how much he loves the project is a good sign for King fans.
Social media brings a new element to Carrie's story
It's interesting to see that King specifically took care to highlight the social media aspects of the new adaptation. As the trailer already suggested, an elaborate pattern of bullying will be a major part of the new "Carrie," which is par for the story's course. Bringing social media in the mix makes perfect sense, considering its contemporary setting — and indeed, the trailer reveals that the show will feature some sort of major, social media-themed act of bullying that may act as a catalyst for Carrie's destined path of telekinetic destruction.
With Flanagan's "The Mist" remake and "The Dark Tower" TV series also on the way, there's plenty of goodness in the pipeline for fans of both of these horror luminaries. Before that, however, it looks like poor Carrie White (Summer H. Howell) is not going to have a great time — and neither will the people who torment her. At least the audience is in for a special Halloween treat.
