Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Resurrects A Surprising Marvel Storyline
Contains spoilers for "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2, Episode 2 — "Shoot the Moon"
That White Tiger storyline on "Daredevil: Born Again" seemed like a done deal. When Hector Ayala (the late Kamar de los Reyes) accidentally caused the death of a shady cop in "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 1, it turned out that he was the masked vigilante White Tiger. The ensuing court case and Hector's eventual assassination seemed to serve as a means to several ends.
Thanks to Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) defending Hector, the cops who would soon form the Anti-Vigilante Task Force now hated the blind lawyer's guts. Hector's death established how brutal New York City has become for masked vigilantes, and the killer mimicking Punisher brought Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) in the mix. Mission accomplished, right?
Yet, the White Tiger lives on in the refined and confident "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2. Those in the comic lore know had probably noticed the prominent Season 1 presence of Hector's niece, Angela del Toro (Camila Rodriguez). In "Shoot the Moon," Hector's widow Soledad (Ashley Marie Ortiz) is taken by the AVTF for a menial reason, leaving Angela distraught. Her reaction to the situation is to visit Kirsten McDuffie (Nikki M. James) and ask to see Hector's suit and White Tiger amulet. Though it doesn't happen just yet, this course of action all but states that Angela is set to succeed Hector as the new White Tiger — just like she does in the comics.
In the comics, Angela del Toro is a hero with connections to multiple vigilantes
The comic book version of Angela del Toro is already a grown woman and a trained FBI investigator when her uncle dies. When she was young, she already knew heroes like Danny "Iron Fist" Rand, and when she ends up in possession of the White Tiger amulet, she immediately starts seeking superhero mentoring from Daredevil. She would go on to have several interestingly strange adventures, including team-ups with Black Widow, a comic book death and resurrection, a stint as the Hand's loyal servant, and a bitter feud with her aunt and fellow White Tiger, Ava Ayala.
Since the "Daredevil: Born Again" version of Angela is considerably younger and decidedly unaffiliated with federal authorities, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already playing fast and loose with the character's comic origins. This is understandable, considering her ties to certain storylines that the MCU is unlikely to adapt in a hurry, such as Daredevil taking control of the Hand.
Still, Angela was already very investigation-minded in "Born Again" Season 1, which definitely seems to suggest that the show is paying attention to the source material. The fact that she now seems to have her eye on the physical attribute-enhancing White Tiger amulet seems to indicate that "Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2 may be introducing a brand new vigilante sooner rather than later.
"Daredevil: Born Again" Season 2 is streaming on Disney+.
