Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Release Date, Cast And Plot

Even after it was almost derailed by a set of eerily human-looking teeth, the film adaptation of Sega's beloved mascot was a hit both with fans of the games and at the box office. Although critics felt there was some room for improvement, the zippy design of Sonic himself and the likable cast of human characters were enough to have the film declared the rare successful video game adaptation. After a few months of speculation, Variety has confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is officially on its way from returning director Jeff Fowler.

In the first film, we're introduced to Sonic (Ben Schwartz), an alien hedgehog who uses a dimension-bending ring to travel to earth. Once there, he's pursued by the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), who wants to harness Sonic's supersonic speed for use in his robotics experiments. Sonic teams up with Tom (James Marsden) and his wife Maddie (Tika Sumpter) in order to evade Dr. Robotnik's increasingly menacing attempts to capture the hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog was enjoyable and did justice to the games, but it also left lots of room to go bigger and better with another installment. Now that we know one is on the way, let's dig into the details of what we know about the release date, cast, and plot of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

What's the release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2?

The official announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was a welcome piece of news for fans of the iconic blue speed demon. However, when Paramount made the announcement, it was just that: news and not much else. However, in late July 2020, the studio revealed the official release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 2

Ben Schwartz, who voices the speedy little hedgehog, posted to his Twitter account a video of himself confirming the news. Well, the video simply featured Schwartz strolling beside massive promotional posters for Sonic the Hedgehog while, in hilariously awkward fashion, explaining what he was seeing. The caption of the video is where the actor made things crystal clear: "SONIC 2 IS OFFICIALLY COMING 2 THEATERS 4/8/22!!!"

Who's in the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2?

One of Sonic the Hedgehog's biggest strengths was its cast. Ben Schwartz, of Parks and Rec fame, is a fan of the original Sonic games, which showed in his energetic vocal performance as the titular hedgehog. Jim Carrey was delightfully unhinged as the villainous Dr. Robotnik, while James Marsden and Tika Sumpter provided the right balance of humor and heart as Sonic's unassuming human allies.

No casting announcements for the sequel have been made yet, but we expect that those core four actors will be returning for the sequel. Whether other supporting actors, like Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell, return will likely depend on the plot and setting for the sequel.

Another big question mark is whether Colleen O'Shaughnessey will provide the voice of Tails. The character was introduced in a brief post-credits scene (more on that in a minute), and O'Shaughnessey, a veteran voice actress who has played Tails in a variety of Sonic video games, performed the character's limited dialogue. The film set up Tails to play a larger role in the next film, but the question remains as to whether they'll have O'Shaughnessey continue to voice the character or hire a big-name star for the part.

The clues we have about Sonic the Hedgehog 2's plot

One complaint a few critics lodged against Sonic the Hedgehog was that it was light on plot. The movie largely served as an exercise in world-building and as an introduction to its characters. However, the ending of the movie laid the groundwork to launch a sequel with much higher stakes than the first film.

Depending on how you view things, there are actually two endings to Sonic the Hedgehog. The first sees Dr. Robotnik after he's been blasted to a mushroom planet by Sonic. Although he's living in extreme exile, the mad scientist seems determined to escape his intergalactic fungi prison and return to Earth, leaving the door wide open for his return in the sequel.

The true ending of the movie comes in the form of a post-credits scene. We see another ring portal open up near Green Hills, and Tails, who fans of the games will recognize as one of Sonic's closest allies, zips through. After checking some kind of GPS device, Tails says, "If these readings are accurate, he's here. I found him. I just hope I'm not too late," before flying off to find Sonic.

While neither ending provides conclusive evidence for what we can expect from the sequel, they do set up that Dr. Robotnik will be back and even more unhinged, and that Tails will have a high stakes problem he needs Sonic's help with. As for the details, we'll likely have to wait until Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters.
