Outer Banks Season 2 - What We Know So Far

With much of the world stuck inside due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it's a great time to lead a streaming service. Still, with all this hunger for content, the binge-able TV shows that everyone blasts through in a few days and talks about for a week are being used up even faster than they can be pushed out.

For example, most fans have run through the Netflix teen drama and crime caper Outer Banks, even though it has been less than a month since its initial release. Now, the cliffhanger ending of the Pogues' ongoing search for stashed treasure has viewers fiending for more.

Unfortunately, the same situation that has pushed us all inside has made the future of television production incredibly uncertain. There's no telling when the all-clear will sound and crews can get back to work on another season of beachside dramatics.

The entire industry is on pause, but that doesn't mean we know nothing about a new season of Outer Banks. Here's everything we've gathered about the continuing battle between the Kooks and the Pogues.

Outer Banks season 2 release date

No release date for the new season has been announced, but the show's immediate success has the team behind it hopeful for another shot. Showrunner Jonas Pate revealed that Netflix gave the drama a long leash when they approved the first season, sharing that the streaming giant hinted they should begin work on Season 2 scripts even as the first season was being made. Pate thinks that the story could play out over four seasons.

"Ever since we started, we always viewed it as something that was probably like a four-season, maybe five-season show, but definitely four seasons," he said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "We've sort of long-arced it out pretty far. I'm just hoping that we get a chance to actually tell those stories."

Outer Banks Season 2 cast

Outer Banks fans can expect most of the main cast to return, excepting the pair that disappeared at the end of season 1. In that same interview with EW, Pate said he was looking forward to getting deeper into the established characters of the series.

"Now that the audience knows our characters and the baseline engine of the mystery is going, we just feel like we have a lot more good twists and turns left to explore, so we're excited for more," he said.

They've been ruminating on what to do with a second season since before the first season dropped, and now, the crisis has given the team even more time to fine-tune the stories they want to tell.

"Before [season 1] even came out, Netflix had greenlit us to write some [season 2] scripts, so we've been working on that for a few months now," Pate said.

Outer Banks Season 2 plot

According to the cast, the second season of Outer Banks will focus on the shifting status of the Pogues.

"There's gonna be a whole new dynamic. How do you go about life without your best friend? I think it's going to be rough on everyone," actress Madison Bailey (who plays Kiara) told Seventeen. "And we're going to have to come together and take care of each other now more than ever. But revenge is going to be on all of our minds."

Rudy Pankow, who plays JJ on the series, said that he's interested to play another season as his character. JJ had his world torn apart at the end of season 1, and Pankow seems excited to explore that.

"I really want to see him struggle with coming to terms with the fact that his best friend is gone, and what's the point in trying any more?" he said in an interview with Seventeen. "I think that's something that I want to see.

No one is sure when Outer Banks will return or what the second season will cover. What we can say with almost certainty is the fan reaction has guaranteed a return to the island.
