Extraction 2 - What We Know So Far

The action-packed Extraction is every bit as thrilling as you'd expect a movie starring Chris Hemsworth and produced by the Russo Brothers to be. Audiences have taken notice, too, and, as Deadline tells us, the movie seems to be on its way to becoming the most-watched Netflix original film ever. It had the biggest opening day for a movie in the streaming service's history, and current estimates project that a whopping 90 million households will watch Extraction in its first four weeks.

With that in mind, the question on everyone's lips is whether we'll ever get a sequel. Fortunately, writer Joe Russo has confirmed that the answer is yes. "The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be," he says. With the Russo Brothers' production company, AGBO, now busy working on the second installment, it's a good time to take a look at what we know about the Extraction sequel's release date, cast, and plot.

What is the plot of Extraction 2?

The plot of Extraction 2 is still largely up in the air, seeing as the script is yet to be written. The ending of Extractionduring which young Ovi Majahan (Rudhrakhs Jaiwal) noticed a familiar-looking figure watching over him as he was swimming in his school's pool, certainly teased that the seemingly deceased Special Air Service Regiment soldier-turned-mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) might've survived the first movie after all, potentially paving way to a very traditional, "Oh man, here we go again" sort of action sequel.

Writer Joe Russo has told Deadline, however,  that the plot of Extraction 2 could go in a number of different directions, and might, in fact, even turn out to be a prequel. "We're not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time," he says. "We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience." Regardless of which route they end up taking, it certainly appears that they're aware of the great expectations after the first Extraction's success, and are determined to answer the call.

Who will be in Extraction 2?

Let's be fair: The biggest question about the cast of Extraction 2 is whether Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake will appear in the movie. The Australian's combination of acting skills, impressive action heroics and sheer star power played a big part in making Extraction what it was, and while the movie deliberately left Rake's fate ambiguous, Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly "optimistic" that Hemsworth will return to the role, should the story so require. Indeed, it looks like Hemsworth's signature may not be too hard to acquire, seeing as the actor is so enthusiastic about the movie that he posted a humble thank you to the fans on Instagram (via Deadline) when the movie's success became apparent. Oh, and seeing as he's worked with the Russo Brothers and director Sam Hargrave (who Joe Russo wants to return for Extraction 2) several times before, he probably wouldn't mind rejoining forces with them, either.

Assuming Hemsworth returns in the sequel, he'll probably have to face a number of new threats, though it isn't out of the realm of possibility that prominent characters like Rudhrakhs Jaiwal's Ovi or Golshifteh Farahani's Nik Khan may also return. It's also interesting that Joe Russo has teased that the story of Extraction 2 might actually take place before the first movieTaking the prequel route would allow the sequel to feature all sorts of interesting characters who didn't survive the events of Extraction, such as David Harbour's treacherous ex-mercenary, Gaspar, and Bollywood hotshot Randeep Hooda's tragic anti-villain figure, Saju.

What is the release date of Extraction 2?

Extraction 2 is still in very, very early stages, so it's incredibly difficult to guesstimate its release date. Given its considerable success, however, it's unlikely that we can compare its production schedule to the first Extraction, which the Hollywood Reporter notes was at the script-writing stage way back in 2013. Perhaps a better comparison is another high-profile Netflix original, Bright, which premiered in late December 2017. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Netflix started negotiating for the movie in March 2016, with stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton already in, and director David Ayer attached, as well.

Depending on how long it will take Joe Russo to put together the script, and assuming that Sam Hargrave and whatever stars the plot requires will happily attach to the sequel (which is a fair assumption, considering the success of the first one), we can use Bright's rough timeline to estimate that Extraction 2 might drop on Netflix sometime in the spring or summer of 2022. All of this, of course, is also going to be affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, so, depending on how world events progress, that could mean a longer wait for more Extraction action.
